Japan makes 30 km/h the default speed limit on most residential roads - as European city survey shows significant safety benefits
Japan has lowered the statutory speed limit on most of its residential streets from 60 km/h to 30 km/h, effective 1 September. The new limit applies automatically to roads narrower than 5.5…

Boom! 🚇 The City Rail Link is already helping make Auckland city centre into a 7-day city: Saturday 9pm ridership is now equivalent to pre CRL midday ridership 💥. Next month night frequencies are improving too, and getting a little later on Friday and Saturday nights, a good start. More please!

This is brilliant. Exactly what the country needs. Invest in great alternatives to always driving. Even benefits drivers: #nzpol youtu.be/LGX6jjJnFBc?...

New Zealand households probably won't feel much better off until next year, ASB says.

My latest vid for @wellyclimatenerd.net and I’m basically frothing over all the practical and ambitious transport improvements announced by the Greens today!!
As a student, I used to get the overnight train down to Ruapehu on a Friday night, ski Saturday and Sunday, and make it back up to Auckland for 8 am lectures. Trains just make so so much more possible 💚🚆
Remember travelling on the Silver Fern overnight train service between Wellington and Auckland as a child (after catching the Rangatira ferry from Lyttelton to Wellington) and it was great. Still got this set of cards as a souvenir.
Berating someone who is now agreeing with you, for choices they've already shown remorse for, and cannot go back and change - doesn't make someone want to keep talking to you I want him to keep talking to me, keep following me on Instagram, keep being curious. That's how we got to our convo today
I don’t want self driving cars I want people to want the ultimate commuting machine (trams)
Along with others, I've had a bit to say about Simeon Brown's deranged 2024 Transport GPS. But this is actually shocking. It was altered *after the consultation period* to make the books look better – in a way that wrecks the National Land Transport Fund. www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/09/29/t...
Transport borrowing comes back to bite - Greater Auckland
Today, Treasury is releasing the Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update (or PREFU) ahead of the election. So I figured it was worth looking at a significant recent change to the way transport expendi...

Similar to what @tomflood.bsky.social often says, one of the reasons I love living in a city because I value my time and just don't want to go far for stuff.
I just went downstairs, walked three minutes to a boulangerie, and got a warm baguette. Tell me again why 15-minute cities are bad.
Chlöe Swarbrick gives an almighty summation of the current governing coalition’s record. Her speech, given as parliament closes for the election, also outlines why the @greens.org.nz need to lead the next government… the video is well worth your time. #nzpol

A company presold $200k worth of carbon removal credits for an unproven tech, then tried to bully New Zealand into gutting environmental laws to bypass safety checks. Officials found zero evidence their "ocean fertilization" method works or is safe. 🌊
Very glad to see this decision not to bend the rules for this secretive company exploiting partnership with government researchers for false credibility
When Stanford was exposed for trying to remove all references to climate change from the year 1 to 10 curriculum she claimed it was just a cockup. This shows micro mgt by her office over the curriculum while avoiding the OIA www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...

it's funny how they try to describe situation in a bad light but i'm reading it like "a lane for buses and cycling right by my office? hell yeah, let's do it"
This is so true. I was a hardcore "everything is structural" guy when I was younger but over & over again in my lifetime I've seen history-defining shit happen just because some guy or small group of guys was in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time. Contingency rules everything around us.
Your 20s are for believing everything is structural and your 30s are for learning that actually it's often just some guy or small group of guys (gender neutral)

The following public transport projects for NZ should be completely uncontroversial: - light rail in Auckland and Wellington - completing the electrification of the North Island Main Trunk and sparking the East Coast Main Trunk - Extending Te Huia to Tauranga and the Capital Connection to Whanganui
There *should* be light rail under construction from the railway station to Island Bay and Miramar but nooooo instead the worst people, obsessed with “four lanes to the planes”, are impeding the capital from becoming what it ought to be

I’m exceptionally jelly about Auckland’s new infrastructure and just so depressed that the government hates Pōneke so much that we don’t get nice new ways to get around without cars without fighting tooth and nail to get 10% of what’s needed.
