"The amount of fuel Russia could export is too small, the impact on pricing too slight, the narrative too late to shape electoral outcomes: This looks, instead, like something very different: an abrupt, Hail Mary attempt to force Ukraine to surrender" www.theatlantic.com/idea/2026/10...

Trump’s Message to Ukraine Is Now Crystal Clear

The president’s actions over the past 72 hours look like an effort to force Kyiv to surrender.

Two most important facts: 1) since Trump became President, attacks on Ukraine have grown substantially in volume and scale. 2) Since Trump became President the US has committed zero (yes, zero) new dollars to support Ukraine.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

New GB News accounts are out. Here are their losses to date. Or "spent political donations" if you prefer

Line chart titled 'GB News has lost £142m to date', showing cumulative losses in pounds rising steadily from around £3m in 2020/1 to £142m by 2025. The red line climbs most steeply between 2021/2 and 2023/4, reaching roughly £110m, then flattens as growth slows towards £142m. A note states the latest figures cover the seven-month period to 31 December 2025. Chart by Press Gazette, source: Companies House

These anonymous MPs saying it's 'electoral suicide' to tinker with the triple lock. Exactly the type who got us into this mess: unwilling to lead, unwilling to recognise reality for fear of offending voters, unwilling to solve long-term problems if it presents the slightest short-term risk.

🌟Shortlisted for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction🌟 With its haunted shoes and sheep and cats, Bora Chung's novel in ghost stories (translated by @antonhur.com) gently suggests the degree to which humanity’s efforts to control the world are themselves figments and fantasies.

And so perhaps it’s true we don’t know much about the world at all. We like to say there’s nothing new under the sun, but we don’t have the slightest inkling of how many things there are, indeed, under the sun."

The value of the UK Court interpreting market in 2025? £42 million, apparently. But I wonder how much of that actually reaches the pay packets of the skilled interpreters who provide the service in the courts? How much goes to intermediary organisations? #XL8 @iti-uk.bsky.social

A question on #MinistryOfJustice #TranslationServices tabled by Sir John Hayes on 11-09-2026 has been answered by Jake Richards. https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2026-09-11/29097

So, according to this Parliamentary question: "The total spend by the Ministry of Justice on interpreters and related translation services during the 2025 calendar year was £41,945,961.34." I have a simple question: How much of that £42 million ended up being paid to the actual interpreters?

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

Turned down last week: 2 festivals with no budget for speakers 1 writing course with no budget for teachers 1 film project with no budget to option the book - plus they wanted me to write the screenplay. For free. Don't do it, kids. Don't work for free. Because to them, what's free is worthless.

NEW MRP JUST DROPPED: All but four constituencies in GB support UK membership of the EU. In those four, the most popular option was 'Don't Know' (Ashfield, Clacton, Great Yarmouth and Boston and Skegness).

Fair play to the wife of a Caribbean man and mother of mixed race children being informed by the BBC reporter that she’s in the minority in her community regarding immigration and responding with, “Yes, I’m surrounded by bigots.”

The hospitality industry are back lobbying for a VAT cut They don't mention the cost: £12bn They don't mention who gets the £: ❌ The smallest most vulnerable businesses? Get nothing ❌ Consumers? Prices won't fall ✅ McDonald's gets £400m. Big chains are big winners 🧵:

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

Five people climb a gantry in the name of Just Stop Oil and the police shut the motorway, arrest the protesters and imprison them for up to 5 years. Hundreds of people block one of UK's busiest ports in the name of Stop the Boats, and the police do nothing and no-one is arrested. Really? Sigh.

And now the investigation into the £5 million secretly-gifted by an ‘economic migrant’ recommences. If nothing else has been achieved with this daft by-election, the idea that Farage is some sort of master strategist has been put to bed. It’s easy to look good when you’re getting free passes galore.
