My absolute favorite(*) driving story was when I lived in Houston, 27 years ago, I saw a TV news report about bad drivers. They interviewed a little old lady who said she never used her turn signals "because ain't nobody got no right to know where I'm goin'!" (*) Least favorite.

Buddy, you are driving something that is registered to you with visible identification at all times and requires a license from the state to use. You don’t really have a right to privacy on the road.

This morning I decided to go to the second-best bagel shop for breakfast, and as I wait here for over 15 minutes without a bagel in my hand I am remembering one reason why they are the second best.

"A boycott makes demands. This made none, set no conditions, named no grievance, and offered the Recording Academy no way to win them back. You negotiate with an institution whose judgment you still need. The one whose judgment you have outgrown, you simply inform." Damn. 🫳 | | 🎤

For five years, BTS wanted a Grammy, and the wanting was never hidden. The group submitted its music every cycle. Its members flew to Las Vegas and delivered performances that outclassed the ceremony ...

All this sounds fairly academic and innocuous, but when translated into the problem of administering the stuff, the results are horrendous. It is, of course, an extraordinarily effective estrogenic agent, but that is the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known patient*, and so rapidly hypergolic that no induction period has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as syringes, examination tables, cotton wool, and nursing staff, not to mention saline, alcohol, and air. It can be kept in certain fluorinated polymers, provided they are not scratched, flexed, looked at sternly, or otherwise given an excuse to participate. * The only confirmed patient not only survived but lived to a comfortable old age. Throughout life she retained the ability to ignite combustible materials by touch. The medical significance of this observation remains uncertain, but the insurance implications were immediately obvious. She is on record as having ignited cigarettes, upholstery, and, on one occasion, an accountant. Apart from these inconveniences she remained in excellent health, and was generally agreed to have led a happy, if unusually vigorous, life.

He doesn't even spring traps really. He asks questions and asks follow-up questions and says "What do you mean?" and then the interviewee drops the rake they are holding, walks onto it, and starts hitting their own testicles with a hammer.

My country is not for cowards who fear difference, for lily-livered people who cannot bear the sound of a foreign tongue, the taste of a new food, the tempo of an unfamiliar kind of music. It is for the strong worker who welcomes new immigrants, not the slacker who fears the diligence of others.

The first warning arrived on a Tuesday morning, six weeks after consultants advised moving from dependency on six hundred small excel scripts - and nobody at Zenith Ledger Advisory paid much attention. It appeared in the system dashboard between routine audit notifications and a maintenance reminder

“average guitarist knows three chords” factoid actualy just statistical error. Guitar Georg, who lives in London & knows all the chords, is an outlier and should not have been counted

I don't know which is more quintessentially Bavarian: the guy in lederhosen walking through the park with a girl in a dirndl, or the other guy riding his bicycle with a pretzel hanging off of each handlebar. (Hi from Munich!)

New Year's Eve, 2000. All my friends are out of town, I'm sitting by myself in the House of Pies drinking coffee and eating pecan pie. At 10 they closed and kicked me out, so I walked around the streets of Houston until 1am and then went home.

What's a moment from your life, out of context, that's straight from a movie? I'll start - in Tokyo, looking for a quiet place to eat lunch, I sat down in a graveyard. The biggest goddamn raven I've ever seen in my goddamn life landed on a stone next to me. At her insistence, I shared.
