I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son; our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht - which was closer - and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this)

This 100x! My main issue with the idea of "workforce pipelines" is that we presuppose it is the university's job to turn out certain types of workers like a game of "Age of Empires" rather than providing the best education we can and letting our students (who are adults) figure out their own lives

Other dads: I don’t get this Common Core crap, it’s not how I learned math. Me: I used to tutor and I find it analogous to how I sometimes had to find different ways to explain the same problem to different kids, to give them all avenues to understanding. Other dads: *move to a different room*

This is exactly what is happening. The hypocrisy of academic administrators (on 12 month contracts) celebrating wellness & work/life balance “programming” while insisting on 9 month contracts for faculty that accrue no vacation days and inadequate sick time traps anyone w/ a serious illness. 👎

This is a good example of the "sticky misery ephemeral bliss" problem of misinformation. The college affordability crisis of the 2010s has largely been addressed. Nobody knows this.
