With AGI overwhelming the news again, I repeat: There is no path to intelligence via LLM. But an LLM botnet choking the internet, or someone using a local model to attack aging infrastructure, are both real risks and too late to prevent. Pay no attention to the bogeymen, the harm is here today.

In 2012 I took a comp ling course that went deep into language models as AI. The professor dropped a quote that I think about probably once a week now: “building a computer model of language and expecting intelligence is like building a computer model of the ocean and expecting to get wet”

Isn’t it interesting though that Mike Johnson shrugs all this off as just provocative things said just to create a “persona online” from one of his ACTUAL NOMINEES FOR CONGRESS, but Hasan Piker, who isn’t running for anything, supposedly represents the entire Democratic Party.

Trump and his allies “test out their strategies here because they think people elsewhere aren’t watching,” says Katie Kersh, a Dayton-based immigration lawyer. “They will bring them to your state eventually."

Trump and MAGA have waged a campaign of racist lies and fear on Springfield, Ohio’s Haitian community — from ICE raids to the president’s destruction of Temporary Protected Status (TPS). @swin24.bsky.social reports on the crackdown that is unlike anything else. Read now: zeteo.com/p/trump-spri...

Name a non-LotR character who could resist the One Ring. "For some things the price is too high." (BTW, I think he's the ONLY Trek captain who could resist, and even then only if he knew exactly what it was in advance.)

Name a non-LotR character who could resist the One Ring. Xena yes, Hercules no. Hercules would have turned super-Nazgûl in nothing flat, maybe faster.

Lucy Lawlessas Xena, Warrior Princess

Name a non-LotR character who could resist the One Ring A life of being the universe's chewtoy has made Rincewind very suspicious of anything positive in his life. Any promises the Ring might make would only make him wonder when the bill will come due... and how expensive the interest would be.

Name a non-LotR character who could resist the One Ring "D-do not mistake-MISTAKE me, in-in-insect. It is not that I do not d-d-deserve the p-p-power of the One Ri-Ri-Ring. It is s-s-simply th-that my d-d-divine f-form has no place upon which a ring could s-s-sit."

In the same way that the invention of photography incentived the development of abstract art, the silver lining to this immense dark cloud is that a type of "dirty" art will be incentivized. One that revels in ugliness and the vulnerability of human error. The end of auto-tune.

Money that comes into the United States government is government revenue. It is part of the public fisc. There's not "taxpayer money" and then "extra bonus money outside the rules." It's all taxpayer money. And spending *any* of it requires Congressional authorization. 2/

Here's what I think about when I think back on 9/11. The attack happened on the watch of a Republican president who had been warned, repeatedly & explicitly, that an attack was coming. He dismissed those warnings.

What I took from that era is that there is nothing the Republican Party can do that's awful enough, disastrous enough, to bring it any real accountability, because the whole system is wired to defend & excuse it. The Trump Era has only made that more nakedly obvious.

Not true! But what DID happen is that nearly all Dem politicians threw in with Bush/Cheney and the R’s in Congress to support the Patriot Act and invasion of Afghanistan, as well as censoring of non-maximally-patriotic speech - and that’s what today’s R’s are truly nostalgic about.

But that feeling of a shared bond among all Americans in the early weeks after the attack is something I’m so glad I got to experience. Because it’s the thing that I think we’re missing the most today.

To be clear- this is Trump demanding a personal loyalty oath. You know, the thing dictators do. The thing HITLER did. This should be the leading story here- not that he's asking people to rig the election for him, but that people should put him above the country and above the Constitution.

Trump: "Please right your right hand. I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States. That loves us so much he can't even breath. That I will go out with my family, my friends, I'll do it any way - I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm going to try to cheat like hell..."

Literally seconds after reports of the first plane crash came in a co-worker loudly stood by her seat and shouted anti-middle-eastern slurs. Later that day an Indian friend was asked why “his people” attacked the USA.

The plagiarism machine I created will likely kill us all, there’s a 40% chance, no, higher, like 75%,or more! But NO I will not “unplug it,” that’s an insane suggestion. The scientific solution is to *give me more money.*
