Currently finalising an article with a biography. Shocked to see that in proof setting, the editor, 'for clarity', changed my dead husband to a 'wife' - I've had to fix it back in the proof. The biography even notes I'm LGBT+ - they apparently don't believe two men can be parents. #LGBTSTEM #GayDad

David Smith was educated at the University of Oxford, carried out postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich and has been an academic at University of York since 1999. In recognition of his research team's work on LMWG hydrogels, he was awarded the prestigious RSC ‘Tilden Prize’. He also received the SCI ‘Science for Society Award’ for chemical education and outreach. Dave has engaged widely on wide-ranging aspects of inclusion and diversity, being named on Attitude Magazine's ‘101 List’ of influential LGBT + figures (2026). Since the death of his wife (they changed this from husband - I have had to change it back) in 2019, Dave has worked part-time and is a single parent to their son.
