lmao, I got back some medical test results that are so bad my doctor has to check in with the doctor who created the test to see if it's a data issue or a legitimate result

I grapple with enjoying so much transhumanist cyberpunk that views the body as something for your “consciousness” to “transcend”, while holding a deep-seated belief that anything you might reasonably call “human consciousness” is inseparable from myofascia and physical nerves and gut bacteria

"Human consciousness is not incidentally but constitutively organic" is a great line. And I believe at some point a history will be written of how "machine learning" opposed, became, then opposed again "artificial intelligence".

Despite the continual deployment of the language of emotion, biology and neurology, the disanalogies between brains and computers are incomparably greater than the analogies. Human consciousness is not incidentally but constitutively organic. Living and engineered systems are different not in degree but in kind. Real intelligence is inextricable from organic embodiment, from being a feeling organism passing through time and space shaped in every moment by its needs, fears, desires. Functional information-processing taking place in an atemporal mathematical space is so utterly unlike the lived intelligence of a human being that to call it “intelligence” at all is to wholly falsify its nature. “Artificial intelligence” is a highly consequential misnomer.

Nobody can agree on what severity scales mean for ME/CFS (I typically consider myself moderate but am severe on this thread’s scale), but I need to emphasize that even “mild” ME/CFS is more hellish a disease than most people will experience in their life

It's ME(Jaime)@exceedhergrasp1.bsky.social · 2y ago

Today, Aug 8, is #SevereMEDay. Today we discuss severe-presenting #MECFS and remember people with severe ME. #MECFS is an infection-associated chronic illness, which means it is often, but not always, kicked off by an infection. ~Half of #LongCOVID cases at 6 mo meet the dx criteria for ME/CFS. 🧵

Two diagrams from the Mayo Clinic Proceedings article I co-authored. On the left, a diagram of a woman's body, including symptoms of fatigue, muscle aches, PEM, cognitive dysfunction, unrefreshing sleep, orthostatic intolerance, temp. dysregulation, urinary frequency, myalgia, sensory sensitivity/reactivity, swollen lymph nodes & other flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, palpitations/chest pain, appetite changes and diarrhea/constipation. On the right, a wheel diagram of symptoms that may flare in post-exertional malaise, the pathology that occurs w/overexertion in which many symptoms flare and new symptoms may appear. It notes that PEM is not deconditioning, not being more tired than usual after activity, not second-day muscle soreness and symptoms are not necessarily relieved by sleep. It includes all the symptoms mentioned in the first diagram but has some sections on what it's like in the patient's own words.

I appreciate my doctor, he's extremely capable, which makes it all the funnier and more frustrating that he's mostly like "yeah, I think you're completely right, it does suck shit this prescription med you no longer need is making your life hell and yet there isn't an easy way to get you off of it"

Kamaitachi no Yoru is simply one of the most important Japanese games in history, period. In the historical trajectory of novel games, if Otogirisou, Chunsoft's previous gane, is Pac-Land, this is Super Mario Brothers. It is that foundational in the storytelling and design paradigms it codified.

I'm trembling while writing this: Kamaitachi no yoru—not the PC remake, not the iOS port, but the actual original SFC version—has been translated at last by ButThouMust, who graciously brought us an English patch for Otogirisou in the past. This is HISTORICAL.

It is hard to describe how quickly things have fallen for me from “I may be housebound and reliant on others for care, but I am truly at peace” to “every day is a living hell”. I still have optimism I’ll get through this, but holy shit things have never been this bad.

Hey, today is the 1-year anniversary of doing a thing I thought was not particularly consequential at the time but will probably turn out to be the single most important thing in my entire life Things are *real* tough right now, but I'm beyond grateful for the last year, as weird as it's been.

Very tired of having to explain to dear old friends "I would love nothing more than to catch up, but even one-on-one phone calls are too much exertion for me, we have to just text". Truly fuck this disease.

I'm reading Keith Johnstone's "Impro" for the first time since high school, and I'm struck how much it abuts contemplative practice. It's a book about consciously influencing how we perceive reality and poking at altered states of consciousness, just through play instead of seated meditation

Chinese oracle bone script and bronze script are so good, what do you mean some guy 3000 years ago was like "we need a word for poop, I'm gonna draw a guy pooping"

bronze inscription script for 屎, aka poop. It looks like a person sitting down (with a torso and a single arm) and four little bits of poop raining down from the butt

When a moderator in a discord where bullshit drama has been destroying your mental health DMs you as you're preparing to leave the server to be like "you've been so helpful and calm, have you ever considered joining the mod team?" and you just laugh uncontrollably.

By far the funniest thing about zhan zhuang / standing meditation is that like half the time I get 2-3 minutes in and start farting. This is, per several-millennia-old tradition, normal and common! It’s turbid qi being expelled, and a positive sign you’re experiencing qi flow! But also, lmao

Starting to feel like that guy who developed a pain index scale for intentionally getting stung by painful insects but for “what are the nuances of the different ways you can feel your mitochondria failing to produce energy”

do you think the person who coded the ally AI behaviors on Final Fantasy XV describes themselves as a “prompto engineer”
