they called Obama a communist in 2008 and here we are, 18 years later having learned nothing, still shitting our pants over being called communists stop giving a shit what the right wing freaks are going to say about you and gain some principles to stand by

The color and vibrance of the eclipse as it was setting into smokey skies was unbelievable. I’m not sure I’ll ever experience one like this again.

Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

Before reimagining development data, remember what we’ve learned

Why we’re publishing a free, searchable, and ungated archive featuring a quarter-century of USAID evaluation reports.

THREAD. Contrary to what you are being told, 40 years of polling have established that shifting money away from police/prisons toward social services is one of the most popular public policies among *all* political demographics. But it's not just that, it goes way deeper.

So Trump and the White House lied about which plane Trump was on flying out of Turkey, setting up journalists who thought they were on the same plane as the president to possibly be the target of an Iranian attack while he secretly departed on a different one. Words fail.

Contradicting public statements, Trump took secret flight from Turkey amid Iranian threat

The White House said the president was aboard Air Force One as he left a NATO summit. Instead, his departure included an elaborate ruse that concealed his travel.

A little bear figurine carved from amber some 6,000 years ago! 🐻❤️ Named ‘Słupcio’ (‘little guy from Słupsk’) through a children’s naming competition! A hole through its torso suggests it was worn or suspended from a cord, perhaps as a hunting amulet. 📷 National Museum in Szczecin #Archaeology

Photo by G. Solecki/A. Piętak of a small figurine of a bear carved out of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange. The display lighting makes the amber glow. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear's belly, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2cm

It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the museum catalogue record "Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished".

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was 'Słupcio’, an affectionate diminutive meaning ‘little guy from Słupsk’.

Dozens of gas-burning power plants are being built across the country, solely to power data centers. These plants could emit as much planet-warming pollution as half of all passenger vehicles in the entire country in a single YEAR. We need a data center moratorium — now.

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

Our dog stands by me and barks when he wants something. Not stands by the object, not leads me there once he has my attention, he just barks at me, so I never know what it is he wants. He's doing it right now.

When my wife did chemo and radiation, she would go outside once or twice a day and shed the hair as it all fell out. Today, seven months later, we just found a nest a bird (likely a wren) made out of her hair.

When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”

It’s very telling that opening your publication to MAGA “thought” requires a massive downgrade in quality control.

Was just told by a farmer friend that it’s fairly common practice for some vendors at Farmers Markets to buy produce at the grocery store and resell it. So, if you’re using farmers markets to get around shitty produce, do your due diligence on the sellers.

"what radicalized you?" "when i was 7 i watched a chicken sing a sad protest song in jail, a mother rabbit sacrifice her own food to feed her children, and a badger cleric get arrested for standing up to injustice."

The documents that Trump released and endorsed clearly validate and detail a massive Russian intelligence service operation to elect Donald Trump of which he and his entourage were aware and in which they knowingly participated. Russiagate is real, we learn.

to hear Trump tell it, American elections were completely corrupted while he was president and he was helpless to stop it, then they were cleaned up by Biden ahead of Trump's victory in 2024, and now that Trump is president again they are once again becoming third world caliber
