Are you an early-stage graduate student (2nd or 3rd year) or early-stage postdoc based in the US or Canada, working primarily in Drosophila? Would you like to help improve the experience of all trainees working in Drosophila research? If so, read on. (Please repost to reach a broad audience.)

I’m really struggling with the fact that people in my lab have never seen “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Adams Family Values.” I literally had to explain the Thanksgiving scene and re-enact the song. #MillennialPI

Adipocyte-Derived Amino Acid Storage Proteins are Required for Germline Stem Cell Maintenance in Adult Drosophila Females

RIP to Bloomington summer life. Not ready for all of the meetings...and "traffic."
FlyBase needs your help! We ask that European labs continue to contribute to Cambridge, UK FlyBase, whereas US and other non-European labs can contribute to US FlyBase. For more information and how to donate: wiki.flybase.org/wiki/FlyBase...

Some journals are claiming that you need to pay big $$ for gold open access to comply with NIH's new public access policy. FYI that is total bs. You can comply by depositing the Accepted Manuscript into PubMed Central on the Date of Publication without embargo. Pass it on.
A news article about the project I work for.
Why a database of bug genes could be one of Trump’s most devastating cuts at Harvard
I guess I should re-post from the Bird Site "The Rules For Academic Success here": I always get asked for advice about starting/surviving the tenure track. Here are the rules I've found useful. Thought I'd put it out there for the masses... This list gets longer all the time
I've reached that PI stage where I realize I'm about to suggest an experiment that is more "instant gratification" in getting an answer, but way more annoying to do...so I'm going to insist on the "annoying" experiment of course!
Some advance copies of my next book "When Trees Testify" have gone out into the world. Release date: January 20, 2026 What a journey it has been thus far, and looking forward to the continuing journey ahead. #WhenTreesTestify #WhenTreesTestifyTheBook
Thanks to all who have expressed a willingness to support FlyBase. The wheels of bureaucracy are large and grind slowly. We expect to have a fee process in place by July. @flybase.bsky.social

We currently have a call for support that has gone out to European labs, to support FlyBase-UK. We are asking our colleagues from labs in the US and other countries to wait for a similar call to them that will go out in the near future, to support the US sites. We thank you for your patience.
URGENT: FlyBase has lost practically all its funding overnight; even user fees are tied up in denied grant funding. 🤬🤯 Any lab using @flybase.bsky.social please donate using the link in post below. This incredible community, on whose backs our #Drosophila labs depend, can't be left out to dry.
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
All of NIH funding to Northwestern University is frozen. This pause includes noncompeting approved funding, new and competing grants with fundable scores. No reimbursements for money already spent have been received since March. This situation is rarely reported so please Please get the word out!
Senator Durbin noted that some (I believe Republican Senators) had indicated the US had been doing more than its share of biomedical research and it was time for other countries take a turn. I felt I had to interrupt to respond...
I don’t think the general public understands how much international students help keep colleges going. Not just from an intellectual and cultural aspect… but purely financial. They generally pay higher costs for tuition, have to spend more in housing and food on campus, and pay cash.
Many students were recently admitted to Harvard (to various programs), and even if Harvard gets an injunction the students may choose to go elsewhere thinking it’s risky and the may end up having to transfer. Even if Noem loses in court it has caused irreparable damage, at least for coming year 1/

Asking for a friend...is there any university in the US that still has a diversity, equity, and inclusion office on campus?
"to run a contest that you end up not funding as a private organization at this time is… both extremely wasteful of these people’s time, and just devastating in terms of morale." I spoke with @aniloza.bsky.social at STAT today about HHMI's decision not to fund this round of Hanna Gray applicants.
Private funder HHMI pauses postdoc fellowship
As HHMI pauses Hanna Gray fellowship applications, opportunities for young scientists shrink further, making them look overseas.

It is beyond disturbing when the NIH and HHS Directors do not understand that animal models are essential in research www.statnews.com/2025/05/19/a...
There is no replacement (yet) for animal models in medical research
The NIH is “reducing animal use in research.” But there is no replacement for animal models.
