Among the layoffs was character artist Christiane Meister — a 27-year veteran of Bethesda and (as far as I can tell) one of the longest tenured women in games, period. She worked on Argonians + Khajiit in TES3, horses in TES4 and TES5, Fallout creatures, and more. (cont'd)

Screenshot from the 2006 TES4: Oblivion Making Of documentary, showing Christiane sitting an an old school CRT monitor working on a horse. Her cubical is decorated with action figures and plushies, many of them of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, but also a fishtank and a poster of TES3 Morrowind. Photo of the TES3 Morrowind developers around 2002. Christiane sits in the middle, one of the few women on the team.

Game failure? Layoffs Game success? Layoffs Game delayed? Layoffs Game delivered? Layoffs Game announced? Layoffs Game unannounced? Layoffs Game good? Layoffs Game bad? Layoffs Game AI? Layoffs Game no-AI? Layoffs Game hated? Layoffs Game beloved? Layoffs Money cares more for layoffs than games.

Ghost of yotei was big on cutting to the point where they would have weekly cuts. Folks would get up and say here is what I cut this week and everyone would clap for them. Jason Connell said it was successful bc people like to be clapped for lol valid af

It’s wild how the origin story of every right wing weirdo is ‘failed creative’. Used to be shit painters, now it’s shit filmmakers (with some pioneering shit game developers) Correlation or causation? Do those politics block creativity in the first place, or are they the outcome of bitterness?

You can see why over centuries of iteration, two of the main psychic archetypes that end up sticking with these Creative Leadership jobs over multi-decade careers are: 1) Born therapists / analogical "priests" or 2) sociopathic monsters

It's impossible to selectively 'find' and fund the one next massive viral hit indie game. You have to fund a bunch of vetted bets on games and discover only after they launch that one hits (hopefully). Even with all the data, experience and insight in the world there is no perfect formula.
