NYT offers a good account of how the two other countries with a license to produce Patriot missiles have taken years to get production up and running. Germany got permission in 2022 and hopes to make its first interceptor next year. Ukraine has shown amazing abilities in this war, but still...

"Europe’s weak position increases Ukraine’s value. The more the United States retreats, the more Europe needs Ukraine, and the more justified Ukraine’s demand for something in return, such as full EU accession, becomes." Absolutely correct. foreignpolicy.com/2026/06/29/e...

I'm not criticising the families in question - the Dassault and Wegmann (KNDS) heirs have every right to pursue their self-interest. It just feels a bit off that their idiosyncratic decisions have quite a large knock-on impact on the European defence landscape
Such a huge pleasure to discuss Germany’s rearmament and my upcoming book www.amazon.com/Germany-Rear... with Marcel Dirsus in his fantastic podcast - listen in!
🚨 Germany is rearming. Should Europe be worried? In the new episode of the podcast, @lianafix.bsky.social joins to discuss the scale of Germany's military plans, the weight of history and the threat of a far-right takeover in Berlin. Watch the full conversation below: youtu.be/WDBkoE3vCqc

@marceldirsus.com fills a major media gap in European (esp German) political commentary for English speakers. I have only found 2 other podcasts that bring in guests as good and have these insider discussions. Plus @lianafix.bsky.social is amazing. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

New piece for @foreignpolicy.com with Paul Stares @cfr.org - we argue that the burden-sharing conversation Europe needs to have is about the burden Ukraine carries to shield a continent that is still far from ready for the day when the US walks away. foreignpolicy.com/2026/06/29/e...

Delighted that the new issue of Foreign Affairs has published this letter to the editor exchange between Hanns Maull and myself about my piece “The Perils of German Power”. Have a read! www.foreignaffairs.com/germany/euro...
A few weeks ago Germany had a bizarre "Kanzlertausch" episode: a brief but intense speculation over whether Merz should suddenly hand over the chancellorship to the premier of North Rhine-Westphalia. We're playing Tinder politics - don't like that guy? Swipe left and try another.
This is a good piece by @lianafix.bsky.social on the competing back-stabbing narratives in US & Europe. For me the root of the problem is European NATO members having failed to propose timetable for burden-shifting on critical enablers last year. Europeans are still not serious enough about it.
Have a read of my new Financial Times Op-Ed, in print tomorrow:

Greatest pleasure to write this with @mkimmage „The Transatlantic MAGA Fantasy“ in which we argue that an overextended US, locked into a prolonged war with Iran, should cut its losses in Europe. Ideological alignment is a luxury, not a necessity, for alliances www.foreignaffairs.com/europe/trans...

Instead of continuing to court Europe’s far-right parties and candidates—and alienating centrist governments in the process—the Trump administration should seek points of cooperation with the continent as a whole, argue @lianafix.bsky.social and Michael Kimmage.

🇩🇪🪖Very interesting article by @lianafix.bsky.social in @foreignaffairs.com on the threat that German “rearmament” could pose to Europe if the #AfD came to power - even though I’m doubtful about the motives behind the “revanchist” territorial claims of the AfD www.foreignaffairs.com/germany/euro...

🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷 A bombshell? Not quite but President Macron went further than expected this afternoon in announcing progress towards a strengthened “European dimension” for France’s nuclear deterrent. 1/
French President Emmanuel Macron has just given a truly remarkable speech on France's nuclear policy at a moment of great anxiety in Europe. I wanted to offer an early comment. Welcome to the age of 'Dissuasion Avancée' in Europe. New post: panda.substack.com/p/dissuasion...
Coordinated with Macron - sometimes that Franco-German cooperation does work - Merz announces that France and Germany have set up a 'nuclear steering group' and that DE will participaty with conventional forces in French nuclear exercises.
“German rearmament could very well yield a Europe that is more divided, mistrustful, and weaker,” warns @lianafix.bsky.social.
