Young also has found "pervasive racial discrimination in selecting grants" to cut that will require a permanent restraining order to prevent the government from continuing this. He also finds an "unmistakable pattern of discrimination against women’s health".

Judge Young is beyond livid — and fuming. He has another hearing that was supposed to begin minutes ago, and he's still going. "I've never seen a record where racial discrimination is so palpable. I've been on the bench for 40 years. I've never seen government racial discrimination like this."

You will hear me saying this constantly between now and Election Day, so get used to it: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court currently has a 5-2 Democratic majority. Republicans will spend millions this year to defeat the 3 Dems facing retention elections and flip the Court. We *cannot* let them win.

"[The House letter] called on appropriations leadership to provide 'at least $51.3 billion' for the NIH’s foundational work in FY 2026. The House recommendation aligns with the FY 2026 funding recommendation set forth by the AAMC-convened Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research."

If you weren't angry enough already, here are the rates of non-competitive renewals through May. 4008 Non-competitive renewals were due to be funded in May. The total funded was 99! Some is due to terminations, but most is due to slow grant making due to DOGE review and other impediments. 1/2

Very smart, high ROI initiative from the Spencer Foundation. Providing bridge funding for canceled NSF grants: 1) directs funds to projects already screened by a top-noch review process. 2) avoids imposing proposal prep costs on researchers. 3) ameliorates the disruption from GOP sabotage.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

“The National Science Foundation, which funds much of the fundamental scientific research at American universities, is awarding new grants at the slowest pace in at least 35 years.” Great data viz by Aatish Bhatia, Irineo Cabreros, Asmaa Elkeurti and Ethan Singer www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
