I've done the Great Walk on Rakiura and spent time in a bach there, and the bird life is like nothing I've ever experienced before in Aotearoa New Zealand. It's kinda what I imagine this place would have been like before humans, and especially so before colonisation. I also saw native bats at dusk!

At the doc for normal check up and first time in ages they are getting everyone to mask. Theyve always had masks available, but dont require people to wear them. Obviously it should always be mask up at the Dr's, but I guess this shows how bad the current flu season is.

This is the correct approach to these issues. Parents need to be willing and able to have conversations with their kids about online stuff. Giving your kid an internet connection/game console/etc and assuming that's the end of your involvement does not work and changing laws doesn't absolve you.
CEO Johnny Cans@oldmatecans.bsky.social · 3h agoI've got a below ten year old who has online access and by having good trust, open conversations and ensuring he knows he can talk to us if he sees something thats scary, wrong or makes him feel bad has meant he is safer online.
The irony here is that the law holds local authorities to much more rigorous standards than apply to central government. If councils acted like this, there would actually be consequences.

Local government has been the punching bag for this government, and I can't tell you how desperate some councils were for a city deal. The fact they continue to reneg on contracts and agreements... I know even former National-aligned councillors are starting to give up on them.

Story in the Herald this am about nursing levels across all areas & shifts. It's horrifying to read how many shifts are understaffed, but made worse by realising HNZ staffing goals are already under safe levels. Even if each shift was 100% covered, care would still be compromised by those numbers.
