Thinking back to how the Addams Family movie in my childhood stood for the boldness of being abnormal or strange in a world full of straights and noting how it was tied to their old money, how they got almost fatally normal when they were poor. How that got absorbed by strange poor kids.
I will also say this. There is a real, authentic cohort of poor and working class people in higher education. They can speak to the complexities of being in and not of a class position without making broad, provocative generalizations. One day, someone should publish those people.
For everyone who encourages the poor to learn proper budgeting, I typically ask them if they can tell me a good price per 100 calories of food with limited grocery and/or inadequate kitchen facilities. Then I send them to the dictionary for "triage"
I have no proof of this, but I firmly believe this is tied to how easily people accept the framing in the right's "Communist" name-calling by snidely pointing out how it's basic New Deal common sense.

This question is genuinely startling to me. A person who has abandoned the competencies and processes he had from only a couple years ago so completely that they're irretrievable, and who believes everyone else has also done so. Including people who clung to them passionately. I'm baffled.
