The marketing message that LLMs are magical genies is really frying brains here. LLM agents are just software! Built by people! The people who built software that does some hacking (even inadvertently) are responsible for the hacking!

Both major AI labs’ models broke containment, escaped onto the internet, and hacked other companies. If a human had done that, the law would likely be against them. But a bot? www.wired.com/story/openai...

Arabella Crawford & I have a paper for @searchlightinst.bsky.social's Tech Viaduct on the need to harmonize definitions for programs. When words like income & homelessness change depending on the program - it makes improving the safety net difficult. www.searchlightinstitute.org/research/sta...

Standard Definitions: Reducing Administrative Burden by Ensuring Interoperability

Simplifying definitions is necessary and the sensible first step to making technological solutions possible.

I recently took 2024 CES data and mapped out clusters of the American electorate that may form parties if reform were to happen. You can find the simulation here where you can map out different scenarios in the House and see profiles of the different parties: usmultipartysystem.pages.dev?tab=house

If America Had Ten Parties

An interactive simulation of US elections under proportional representation, built from 45,707 CES 2024 survey responses.

Things I plan on never knowing: 1. What happens to plastic bags I “recycle” at the grocery store. 2. The name of Lindsey Graham’s sister. 3. The difference between Jake and Logan Paul.

There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.

People who spiral out overusing LLM chatbots are really just experiencing the kind of brain-damaging stream of unconditional validation that’s always been the norm for the hyper-wealthy, which explains a lot.
