More hardline immigration crap from Sweden, it’s such an inflexible, bureaucratic place. My son had a Swedish passport, I am married to a Swede, but it’d be incredibly tricky to settle there (not that I am gasping to lol, I can’t afford the pints) www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Briton facing forced separation from baby son after Sweden orders his deportation

Exclusive: Photographer Simon Montgomery told ‘state’s interest in regulated immigration’ outweighs his family concerns

Odd Mercury Prize dominated by already massive pop artists… which sort of wasn’t the point of the thing? When the leftfield struggles against collapsed sales and algorithms it’s a shame a 100k/Gold/No1 gets the boost, especially after Sam Fender won last year www.theguardian.com/music/2026/o...

With albums under threat, Raye’s Mercury win is a triumph for grand statements | Alexis Petridis

Her winning album has its longueurs, but there’s something heartening about its risk-taking – and the Mercury prize needs big bold records like this to stay relevant

Patrick Wolf looming in from the American desert at the Q&A after the premiere of Wolf at Doc & Roll Film Festival tonight. A poignant film about recovery and rediscovering creativity after terrible lows, but most of all the connection and love between a mother and a son.

Peaches at ATP Nightmare Before Christmas 2004 (the best ATP) and further evidence of my twink era (for all the talk of indie sleaze etc that I don’t really believe existed, this was sort of the pre-American Apparel look, wristband, jeans, often studded belt, ripped sleeve t-shirt)

Fascinating and important thread/research! See also woodland management, as seen in areas of Epping Forest that haven’t been pollarded for years losing biodiversity vs the abundance of grasses, wildflowers, insect life among recently pollarded trees

I've gotten into arguments with ecologists here and elsewhere about the contribution of human land management to biodiversity and ecosystem function. Many people believe that people=bad news, I think the story is much more complicated, and this new paper provides strong support for my view

More of this horror, from the once amazing Gardeners Arms in Loughton (my dad drank there in the 60s, amazing views over east London). This is indeed a “secret supper”, but perhaps not quite how they intended

Watched this last night and, yes, it is even worse than expected. It not only shows the far-right X-brain fash meme theories parroted by Reform members and officials behind the scenes, but also how there’s a deliberate policy to not state the extreme policies they would enact in power

Undercover: "A year in Reform" Warning: Vile people. Vile language. Exposé of Nigel Farage's Reform Party, it's Tory defectors, and it's acolytes. (Underscores the ugliness of the BBC in relentlessly platforming Reform throughout the Brexit campaign and beyond) #UKPol

Not a fan of the framing of this or other forms of inequality as a "postcode lottery" or (next post) "how postcodes shape lives." Place/geography matters. But it's *overwhelmingly* about income/education/SES. The lottery is about who your parents are, not where you're born.

Children’s commissioner @childrenscomm.bsky.social declares “state of emergency” on young people’s lives - my report for @theobserveruk.bsky.social on the “childhood lottery”. observer.co.uk/news/nationa...

Clever idea except the areas are too broad, especially for London which is muddle of deprivation and extreme wealth in any case, as it has been ever since Charles Booth's maps & before. Also Hertfordshire is up among the "best' but you couldn't pay me to live back there again.

Free weekend update is out. This was the week when the USA-Russia alliance was made formal, to even the most ardent skeptics. And its reality was signed in Ukrainian blood. Hopefully now Ukraine, and Europe, will understand what they must do. phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/weekend-up...

Phil Collins and Ali Campbell should’ve released a collaborative album in 1989 under the name COLLINS/CAMPBELL and all the song titles should’ve been sheer 1989, things like ‘Never been one for talking’ and ‘I’m no good (with names)’ and ‘keys to the city’

Automated camera-based no-quarter-given car parking systems are the enemy of the flighty-minded / neurodivergent – the morning I successfully appeal a fine after not realising a payment hadn't gone through I overstay a session by ten minutes by not realising that my time was up argh.
