“There’s a new Mr. Beast book.” You bolt awake in your workshop in Mainz. It’s 1450. You’re Johannes Gutenberg, and you’ve changed your mind. The future cannot come to pass. Your printing press must burn.
Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets. I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap. Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.
The United States is taking aim at Canada once again, with a crushing new set of tariffs. Ultimately, government will need to solve this. But in the same way Canadians are avoiding US alcohol, produce, and other goods, they should get off US tech products too. Luckily, I have a guide for that.

Donut inflation is the most upsetting one of my lifetime. I remember sneering at a 1.50 donut in 2010
Dolly Parton did a huge amount of good with wealth she largely worked to earn. 9 to 5 is a Marxist text & permeant karaoke banger. She stood with queer & trans people throughout her life & the world was a better place for having her stay a while.
Take care everyone. Live your life in such a way that people are genuinely sad when you pass on.
Dear Death: Seriously? You couldn't rail against the darkness? You had to put out another light? RIP Dolly Parton. 💔
Here's the official announcement of Parton's passing from her reps, along with the request that in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com
Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

What we should take away from this is boosting matters. If you enjoy a story: share it, yell about it, make fan things, request at libraries, etc. THAT'S 80% of the luck writers pray for. Gentle reader, YOU are the luck.
I am 90% sure my career wouldn't have happened if a couple people hadn't retweeted one of my stories the exact minute they did. You work your hardest, but it's not in your hands. It breaks a lot of people.
Truth. That can sound unfairly discouraging so I try to frame publishing like a poker game rather than a crap shoot. Winning big will take real skill (with lucky draws) ...but you have to get a seat at the table first. I know better 'players' than me who never got that far.
I tell people all the time that I got lucky with my career and it annoys a lot of them. "No, but you're good," they will say, and I will say, yes, I am good, and also here are all these people who write as well as I do but did not get the same break, so being good isn't the issue, being lucky is.
