Can anyone recommend travel grants which I (senior postdoc) am eligible for and which would cover perhaps a lab visit of 3-4 months (starting from December or January)? I might have some gap of unknown length between two grants due to the university which received the second grant being quite slow.

The scandal of rip-off rents is reaching new heights. The only way to stop landlords treating their tenants as cash cows is for the government to put in place rent controls so ordinary people can keep money in their pockets. Rent controls. Now. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Asking rents reach record highs across Britain, new data from Rightmove shows

Competition between tenants remains significantly lower than at its peak, with the average rental home now receiving 10 inquiries

I am recruiting a postdoctoral researcher and a PhD student, funded by a new ERC grant. The grant focuses on the role of the hippocampus in visual perception, using 7T fMRI (hippocampal subfields, cortical layers) and MEG+iEEG. The intended start dates for both positions are in early 2027. 🧠🟦 1/3

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

Currently finalising an article with a biography. Shocked to see that in proof setting, the editor, 'for clarity', changed my dead husband to a 'wife' - I've had to fix it back in the proof. The biography even notes I'm LGBT+ - they apparently don't believe two men can be parents. #LGBTSTEM #GayDad

David Smith was educated at the University of Oxford, carried out postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich and has been an academic at University of York since 1999. In recognition of his research team's work on LMWG hydrogels, he was awarded the prestigious RSC ‘Tilden Prize’. He also received the SCI ‘Science for Society Award’ for chemical education and outreach. Dave has engaged widely on wide-ranging aspects of inclusion and diversity, being named on Attitude Magazine's ‘101 List’ of influential LGBT + figures (2026). Since the death of his wife (they changed this from husband - I have had to change it back) in 2019, Dave has worked part-time and is a single parent to their son.

would more middle class academics be happy to share whatever they do to improve their finances in this job and how they went about it, like side gigs, consultancy gigs, and investments, or organisations they joined, companies founded, or whatever it is?

The Gender Recognition map of Europe. This is how bad the UK is now. 43rd out of 49. Down with Russia, Hungary, Albania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Worse than Turkey, Serbia and Belarus. A lot worse than Ukraine, and Ukraine has been at war for four years.

Sadly this isn’t new. Here in Stroud Labour threw good Cllrs out of the party because they insisted on working with Greens to keep the Tories out. Disgraceful for a central party to treat their cllrs like that.

The new EHRC guidance is truly horrible and completely unworkable. Are we all going to be made to carry around kariotype photos? (not that it covers all aspects of sex) But this really takes the biscuit. People who think my marriage is inherently sinful shouldn't be assumed to be homophobic? What?!

I lied, because “it is a stereotype that gender critical people are nasty bastards” is actually written into this code and sorry you can’t legislate to make people like you

Examples of stereotypes in relation to religion or belief are that persons who hold or manifest certain gender-critical beliefs necessarily have negative attitudes towards trans people, or that persons who hold or manifest the belief that same-sex sexual activity is sinful necessarily have negative attitudes

wards gay people. The judgment explains that: it may be that some persons who hold / manifest such beliefs have such animus, but it is stereotyping to assume that all do '32

Hasn't even been a year and Zohran's governance is having a massive impact on my family. Our daycare was able to open a 15-seat 3K program because of the 2,000 extra seats the admin funded. Everyone we know got in somewhere they wanted. This is gonna save us almost 50 grand.
