Actually, on the subject of comics in the classroom: One big hurdle I’ve found is teachers lacking confidence in drawing. I cannot recommend Ed Emberley’s how to draw books enough for this. He has a whole range, but Make A World & Faces are the two I’d start with.

We have it in our KS3 curriculum...and reading a book of one's choice for an hour per week is our only English homework for Years 7 to 9. Once the GCSE courses fully kick in in Y10 there is no longer time for it, though. 😐

I haven’t had the pleasure of reading this yet, but this is out in a few weeks, and I’m certain it’s going to be brilliant!

Having recently read the select committee report the part about the GCSE curriculum really jumped out at me - not a new problem as I remember being put off English by it in the late 90s! I only did english A level after meeting an inspiring teacher at sixth form. GCSE English is the mind killer.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

Calling all fans of The Far-Out Five: Book Two is out in six-ish weeks time. It’s called Portal Loo Panic and there are loads of weird dimensions in it plus lots of whelks (and the main villain is an impala called Vlad). Preorder, tell your kids, tell your nan etc.

Currently looking for jobs, and already experiencing cold sweats trying to figure out how to explain ’makes comics’ is relevant experience for anything.
