Baseball might be different, in part because it’s the solved-est of solved sports, but “everyone plays the same style” is a claim that can’t survive even the briefest of contact with anything beyond the most casual observation.

There is something real about maxxing out efficiency in pro sports. It's why everyone starts to play the same style. It's why rules have to change. It's also why I love college sports. The natural flaws in a roster of college kids require more strategy and trying new things.

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice

As someone who makes rankings, this is right on. It's why I feel tiering is so crucial. There are SO many subjective factors you can use to adjust rankings -- age, positional value, what stats your individual case values, etc Rankings are not a set-in-stone truth; it's a starting point

Rankings aren’t substance they’re just a framing device for the substance (a framing device people are fairly likely to click on).

As a creator of this work, the *why* is more important than the ranking to begin with. I would just as soon never put a number next to a ranking again; context is king. If the person giving you a ranking cannot tell you why Player 1 is better or worse than Player 2, the ranking is meaningless.

Hollinger POTD Rafer Alston. NYC street legend was drafted 39th in 98 from Fresno. Started in CBA due to legal issues but became solid NBA PG from 00-10, mainly w/HOU (14 ppg 7 apg peak). Helped lead ORL to 08-09 Finals when Jameer Nelson got hurt. Great nickname "Skip 2 My Lou."
