I can see why Americans like this stuff, high-fiving novelty, “awesome job” and all that, but surely we piss taking Brits won’t tolerate such bollocks? Please let them end up in ditches, or upped on their backs like stuck sheep, corralled by traffic cones, graffitied beyond use and recognition.

Reminds me of that other great Yorkshireman, Alan Bennett. He describes visiting his mam in a care home. In a moment of lucidity she comes around and says to him “by, tha’s has some script out of me.”

Such lovely drying weather and no one's got their washing out." Bless.
Always remember him on R4’s Today programme up against a minister arguing for the then upcoming smoking ban. “You’re dreary! You killed Bohemia!” “Dreary”, what a perfect insult.

I've always been a little suspicious of calling any artist 'the greatest' as though there were some league table. But as the years passed, and the work continued it's restless advance, and the way of seeing never faltered, it became clear to me that David Hockney really was ours. RIP.

Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes has to rank among the greatest casting coups in history. He's so good I sometimes believe in time travel. That someone went back in time and got Arthur Conan Doyle to invent Sherlock Holmes just so Jeremy Brett could play him a hundred years later.
