One of my favorite rhetorical and analytical moves is joining things (showing that different, seemingly unrelated ideas are part of the same phenomenon) and taking them apart (resolving paradoxes by demonstrating that what appears like a contradictory thing is different things, lumped together). 1/

A collage made of architectural features from 'Variae Architecturae Formae' (1636), a collection of engravings. The architectural arches, buildings, fountains, etc, are layered atop each other and placed around each other to create an infinite, recombinant built environment.

Seems like a waste of time to piss into the digital aether and ask a question via a medium of which I feel I have zero to no interaction with others, but are there any creative writing platforms that perform social network-like á la YouTube?

AI has been around since mid-20th century, but it got sensationalised and corrupted first by OpenAI and ChatGPT and then compounded by other sad techbro chasers. The industrialisation and commodification of slop AI is the danger to society & environment. As bad as oil, weapons, alcohol, and tobacco

i talk about AI discourse using the phrase “purity culture” cause ultimately a lot of what we’re seeing now is 100% the exact same shit that you see in evangelical christianity “where’s the line?” “what’s acceptable and what’s not?” life just isn’t that simple, you’ve lost the plot, you’re a cop

Fucking hell. Was booking Air France tickets and they raised the price of my tickets by 144 EUR after I selected my dates with advertised fees, and just before I selected my seats. What a fucking con job. I've never seen that before.

(Me, learning that someone I thought was interesting and maybe even cool is anti-trans) Huh, well, that's that then (Drops the whole person into the bin)

Had a webserver getting crushed by Claude for some reason. Dug in to the logs and someone made a shitty php hangman game back in 2008, the dipshit computers found it, and were “playing” it 1M+ times a day until I blocked it. The future sucks ass

I think the tech of AI is interesting and people should take the time to understand it if they so choose. I think that the engine of capitalism should not force people who are not interested in it to learn what it is. That leads people to dismiss it out of hand. Let people decide if it’s good.

"Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well."

1. We—@eduede.bsky.social, @mjcrockett.bsky.social, Kevin Gross, and I—have a new preprint on the arXiv today, based on ideas that emerged during an @sfiscience.bsky.social workshop in November 2024: The unintended consequences of large language models as a labor-augmenting technology in science.

"Cognitive surrender" is a fascinating concept to think about the impact of AI as it exists under reactionary tech Preventing people from thinking for themselves and imagining different worlds is a godsend for authoritarians thenextweb.com/news/wharton...

Wharton researchers coined 'cognitive surrender' to describe what happens when people let AI think for them

A Wharton study found people accepted wrong AI answers 80% of the time, as apps like Moot now let five AI personas vote on your life decisions.

I was always gonna boycott the Harry Potter TV series but I would urge anyone on the fence to stop engaging with the franchise as long as JKR is using her proceeds to fund her continued attacks on trans people and allies. Reheated nostalgia slop just isn’t worth it.

This is certifiably one of the kookiest, dumbest, stupidest things I have ever seen and read, and I only home that Reform doubles-down because it will only tank them further.

“Cornell researchers found that at the current rate of AI growth, the burgeoning industry could represent 24 to 44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, the equivalent of adding five to ten million cars to US roadways.”

The Pollution Being Churned Out by AI Data Centers Is So Severe That It's Almost Incomprehensible

The extent of the pollution being put out by thousands of data centers is shocking. Some developers are exploiting regulatory loopholes.

It's fascinating to live in a time where the majority of global consumers are just fed up and hate everything new on the market. Hate removal of physical media Hate forced AI Hate video surveillance in cars and homes Hate micro transactions Hate digital subscriptions What a time to be alive!
