Not talked about enough, ever in my opinion, was Samantha Morton as Circe. She’s genuinely vulnerable and terrifying. She’s a Venus Fly Trap, an anglerfish, and a dozen other things beautiful and terrifying. As always, she DELIVERS for whatever small amount of time she is given to perform.

N’yongo hints at what might be the tensions in Helen being back as queen of Sparta, especially given the tense (to put it mildly) relationship she is “enjoying” with Bernthal’z Menelaus. I wish we knew more. She deserves her own film. Or, if not Helen, why not her as Clytemnestra?

The Oresteia would be harder to tell than The Odyssey, so fuck it! Let Clytemnestra get her revenge and win this time. Fuck Agamemnon that dude sucks and I am glad he got what he deserved. On this, Nolan and I agree because that dude looks like Darth fucking Vader.

Did I enjoy the movie? Yeah. I love The Odyssey, in any form. I don’t even mind adding a “sacking cities is antisocial” message. It’s a re-telling, why not add new themes? But the shift to a Christian moral frame drains Odysseus of personality & makes the story incoherent in places. 10/10

I didn’t know The Odyssey could not be horny. It was bizarre.

Finally, I’ll mention the sex. Or lack thereof. In the epic poem, Odysseus spends a full year with Circe, fucking every day. His time with Calypso (7 years!) is equally horny. In the film, Odysseus has no romance with Circe, & only stays with Calypso because his memory is gone. 8/10

This Odysseus isn’t a mischievous trickster. He doesn’t taunt the cyclops (one of the funniest, most iconoc moments in the epic.) He takes great pride in fighting honorably, even warning his prey when hunting. (In the epics, Odysseus’s 2 greatest feats at Troy both involve sneak attacks.) 6/10
