Disability data in the US isn't perfect, but these proposed changes could make it much worse. If you work with disability data, or just value quality public data, take the time to leave a comment TODAY telling the CDC that these changes are not a good plan!

There's still time to submit a comment opposing the changes to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Comments close October 20th at 11:59 PM ET. Leave a comment: https://aapd.quorum.us/campaign/170801/

The CDC is considering a proposal to no longer collect data about disabled people’s health. There are just 24 hours left to oppose this proposed policy: Submit a comment TODAY, using our link!

This column explores remote work’s impacts on UK employment & other outcomes such as commute times, hours worked, & wages. A 1 pp increase in working from home raises full-time employment of people w/ a physical disability by ~0.9% & raises full-time employment of workers aged 50-64 by ~0.4%.

Figure shows share of full-time workers aged 18 to 64 whose main job is done mainly in their own home, in the same grounds or buildings as their home, or in different places using home as a base. Physically disabled workers meet the Equality Act 2010 definition of disability and report a physical, but no cognitive, health condition. Individuals with cognitive health conditions are excluded.

Disabled and older adults have lower employment rates than other workers. Policymakers increasingly point to remote work as a way to keep these groups attached to the labour market. This column uses the pandemic-driven rise in working from home in the UK as a quasi-experiment to explore remote work’s impacts on employment and other outcomes such as commute times, hours worked, and wages. A one percentage point increase in working from home raises full-time employment of people with a physical disability by about 0.9%, close to estimates for the US, and raises full-time employment of workers aged 50 to 64 by about 0.4%.

It’s time for my annual first day of the school year pic - but for the first time I’m not the student! Phanty still hates this tradition but I’m excited about this first semester as an assistant professor!

I know we get inured to stuff, but it is hard to fathom the cruelty here. At a time of tax cuts for the most powerful, they are trying to remove basic supports for the most vulnerable. The Trump administration's war on people with disabilities continues.

NEW: A rule change pushed by White House officials would slash benefits or end support for as many as 400,000 Supplemental Security Income recipients with Down syndrome, dementia and other disabilities whose parents or relatives receive SNAP benefits.

🚨New working paper alert! 🚨 The US spends huge $ on special education services for students with disabilities. Is that spending effective? Today we released a working paper suggesting it is. "Special Education Substantially Improves Learning: Evidence from Three States" Let me explain...

SSI supports 7.4M low-income seniors & people with disabilities but outdated rules and low benefits leave millions in poverty. Our new paper from @socio-steve.bsky.social and @jacklandry.bsky.social models what would happen if Congress modernized SSI. The results are striking. 🧵👇 Full report:

Estimating the Cost and Impacts of the SSI Restoration Act

Stephen Nuñez and Jack Landry find that the SSI Restoration Act would cut poverty among SSI households by nearly 60 percent while updating and strengthening the program.

You know the REAL worst part of ChatGPT? Its over-reliance on em dashes in write-ups has made some people think seeing them in writing is indicative of LLM usage No no no: I’ve been over-relying on/misusing em dashes for *decades* — my culture is not a costume

Janet Yellen has inspired myself and so many other female economists. Her dedication to economics and public policy is an inspiration and it was incredible to be there for the first ever Janet Yellen Public Service Award!
