Gifted kid discourse is exhausting — your mileage may vary! — but I gotta say: my weekly gifted class was the ONLY space as a post-9/11 child where I heard anything to counter the raging Islamophobia. Just recalled it's how I first found "The New Colossus." I was 8 and it knocked my socks off.

August 1st is the 127th anniversary of the end of the Newsboys’ Strike, where newsboys and newsgirls came together to fight against newspaper price hikes. The film and musical adaptation “Newsies” show us the true power of working people coming together to seize the day.

It’s always great to be on Max’s show and it was especially so to be on with Steve Mellon to talk about what we’ve been working on for months! Follow @pittsburghprogress.bsky.social for updates and check out our website (where one of stories is written by me!)

The former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette workers who went on strike for 3+ years, only to have the owners sell the paper and fire most of them, have started their own cooperative news org. Important reporting by @maximillianalvarez.bsky.social

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro now says “hell no” to part of a giant data center outside of Philly This comes after I reported emails exposing talks between his administration & the developer, real estate magnate Brian O’Neill, about Amazon being too scared to invest in it

This is the exact wrong way to do development here in Pennsylvania.
I'm a hell no.

🚨 WE HAVE A DEAL! After three years, in a major step forward for our members, we have ratified our first contract with @propublica.org’s management. We deeply appreciate everyone who supported us along the way. Here are some of our big wins👇

A graphic poster reads "We have a deal! The ProPublica Guild has reached a deal with ProPublica's management on our first contract and has voted to ratify it. Swipe for the highlights [pointing emoji].

“The FBI has signaled that its new effort to brand political opponents of the president as terrorists has only just begun, and that soon the power of large language models will be brought to bear on the effort to flag and tag political dissidents en masse.”

Minority report: FBI seeks AI for political watch list

Documents show the FBI seeking AI tools to flag Americans before they act, as the terror watchlist's focus moves toward domestic dissent.

Saw The Odyssey. I hate jump scares and gory battle scenes, so my eyes were shut for half of it (the sound was more than enough!) so I was mostly focused on the dialogue. It was pretty with fun spins, and not for me, and that’s OK. I hope the people it was made for can hear what it’s telling them.

A wonderful new review by @pittsburghprogress.bsky.social! “Visible at the core of this collection is the importance of building relationships, trust and shared responsibility with the people in our communities who might experience life differently than we do.” Book info: tinyurl.com/mw99v842

I dunno but it should probably be a bigger deal that the White House announced it wants to slap a 100% tariff on drug imports at the same time it is eliminating Medicare drug subsidies. And we’re talking about critical life-saving drugs like insulin, blood thinners, antibiotics, and heart meds.

India supplies approximately 50% of all U.S. generic drugs, and these face the highest tariff
rates:
• Antibiotics: Penicillin, amoxicillin
• Cardiovascular medications: Generic versions of cholesterol drugs, blood thinners
• Diabetes medications: Metformin, insulin analogs
• Pain relievers: Ibuprofen, acetaminophen
2. China-Dependent Active Ingredients
China supplies active ingredients for:
• >95% of ibuprofen and acetaminophen
• ~45% of penicillin
• Many other commonly used medications' base components
