State Senator, MN SD51 | Representing Bloomington, Richfield, Minneapolis | She/Her | Mom. Wife. Democrat, lifelong Minnesotan | Prep & Paid for: Melissa H Wiklund for MN Senate
It’s time for the legislature to take action to support our communities and this bill is one step forward. Metro Surge set many small businesses in SD51 back and the dramatic loss of income hurts in ongoing ways. Support with basic housing assistance will help them recover. youtu.be/_0lAKTZcX0Y

Minnesotans have boldly stepped up and helped keep their neighbors afloat. Now, in this legislative session, we can help prevent the worst of this housing crisis and keep our neighbors in their homes. Today the Senate passed Senator Port’s bill for $40M in rent assistance.
For many reasons, we need to make sure Hennepin County Medical Center continues to serve our community. Trauma care that is needed by MN residents, training for health care providers and special services like the poison control center are vital. Federal actions are causing huge declines in funding.
“Hennepin County cannot afford to absorb those costs, nor can we increase our property tax levy enough to even cover those costs without revenue to replace the ongoing losses,” said Hennepin County Commissioner Angela Conley. “The hospital will not remain open.”
Today, our 2026 session begins and I’m grateful for being together with my colleagues, especially Sen Hoffman. Gratitude for being able to work on the issues important to Minnesotans is mixed with grief at not having Speaker Emerita Hortman with us. I’m glad we will honor her and her family today ❤️
US Olympic Curling Team member speaks out against ICE: "I'm proud to represent Team USA. But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention what's going on in Minnesota and what a tough time it's been. What's happening is wrong. There's no shades of gray."
A man taken into custody in Rochester Thursday by federal immigration agents and now held at the Whipple Federal Building in the Twin Cities is a recent organ transplant recipient who is without his needed anti-rejection medication, state Rep. Kim Hicks tells MPR News.

A beautiful ice sculpture on the MN state capitol plaza. A crystal clear ice sculpture with a crystal clear message for protecting our democracy and constitutional rights: "Prosecute ICE" ICE agents who violate laws & constitutional rights should be prosecuted as anyone else would be.
Operation Metro Surge is not making Minnesota safer. Today's announcement is a step in the right direction, but we need a faster and larger drawdown of forces, state-led investigations into the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, and an end to this campaign of retribution.
With the immediate removal of 700 federal agents from Minnesota, border czar Tom Homan put the total number of agents remaining in the state at approximately 2,000. That’s still a dramatic increase from the normal immigration and enforcement staffing in Minnesota of around 150 agents.
Don't agree with Cato Inst on much. But: Very glad they have quantified what has been obvious for years.
The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023. The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets. https://ow.ly/jy8a50Y8kM3
“This is a reckless operation. It's tearing communities apart, and it's traumatizing our neighbors,” Rep. Kelly Morrison said after visiting the Whipple Federal Building. She also described the atmosphere inside as chaotic, disorganized and unsafe.

Thank you, @kellymorrisonmn.bsky.social , I hope you can speak to leadership in Congress to make sure they clearly understand that this is happening, there has been no slowdown and it is not right. It isn't acceptable for people to be treated like this in Minnesota or elsewhere.
My office has been flooded with reports of the cruel, unsafe, unlawful conditions inside of the Whipple detention facility in Minneapolis. This weekend, I was finally granted access to perform oversight of the facility. youtu.be/0SxPn8n2Bfg

Watch the video as a recklessly driven cheap car careens around and a gang of armed thugs spring out to menace an innocent civilian, like a kidnapping or robbery or murder-for-hire. It looks like organized crime taking place in a third-world country, because it is.

Judge Biery signed the order with a photo of Liam and two bible verses: The first is "But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven." The second is simply "Jesus wept." Astonishing thing for a judge to do.

More than 110 lawmakers from 27 states came together for a Day of Solidarity with Minnesota communities. States have both the authority and the obligation to protect civil rights, demand accountability, and act together when our constitutional rights and democratic principles are threatened.
Visited the very beautiful memorial commemorating Alex Pretti. I appreciate the care of neighbors and friends who have left candles and flowers along with tributes to the wonderful person who was such a good caregiver to everyone he knew.
I was proud to see Richfield Mayor Supple testify today along with St Louis Park Mayor Mohamed about the impact of illegal ICE activity on their communities. Mayor Supple conveyed the impact on trust and safety in her community and others across our state along with enormous negative economic impact
We live in a metropolitan area of the United States. People who are going about their lives like other Americans are being taken away for no reason and trauma is being inflicted at schools, hospitals, neighborhoods. It’s appalling that complaints are made about their dining options being affected.
Q: Can you be specific about how many ICE and CBP agents are currently operating in the state? HOMAN: 3,000. There's been some rotations. They've been in theater a long time. Day after day, can't eat in restaurants, people spin on you, blowing whistles at you. But my main focus now is draw down
Today, in a massive show of support, 1,025 organizations, including immigrant justice, human rights, civil rights, faith, and labor organizations, sent a letter to members of Congress to express horror, outrage & deep grief about the recent shooting deaths by federal agents in Minneapolis.
“Operation Metro Surge has been an unmitigated disaster.” Those were words of a Republican candidate and attorney as he dropped his bid for Minnesota governor yesterday. Where are the voices of our state’s Republican elected leaders? Silence is complicity.
Imagine being a congressman from Minnesota and caring so little about what’s happening here that you just copy and paste talking points. If you’re not writing your own statements and you’re not holding town halls, what exactly are we paying you for?
A statement released by the parents of Alex Pretti. "Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you."
In honor of Alex and Renee. May our communities feel connected and strengthened despite distance and the cold temperatures this day.
The killing of Alex Pretti is another devastating event that hurts all of us in our community. It’s senseless and ICE must leave our state NOW. My senate colleagues and I have shared the statement below ❤️

Here is a literal preschooler wearing a Spider-Man backpack, just like all of our kids, as the hand of a much larger masked ICE agent holds onto his backpack, as if he were a flight risk.
They want to tell you a kid with a Spider-Man backpack is evil
Liam Ramos' innocence, like the innocence of all kids, is unimpeachable. The visuals of his arrest are excruciating.
