People should not have to pay for war profiteering. Add your name to call for an excess profits tax.

Importers tend to be few, large, and have market power, so they're already too small relative to what's efficient, and tariffs make that distortion worse. Accounting for this, the optimal tariff turns out to be negative (an import subsidy), from Becker, Boar, and Midrigan www.nber.org/papers/w35829

He had already surrendered. Video captured today in Oasis, California shows a federal goons kneeling on a man he threw to the ground while tasing him. This whole time the man is surrendering.

I just think it's amazing for someone to assume they understand a problem better than the thousands of engineers and scientists who have studied it *all over the world* for four-plus decades now

elon musk on: stealth aircraft (for the record: everyone involved with low-observable aircraft is acutely aware that they are not "invisible," they just have an rcs so small they can't be effectively detected until they are close enough to have already launched weapons and that is super useful.)

And still, all of it could have been avoided if USA Today respected the experts they interview. They could have been one of the only publications to get it right *from the beginning* by platforming the concerns that sexual violence researchers had as soon as we saw the DA's statement.

After I posted this thread, I got an email from an editor indicating the story had been updated. They removed my quote and added new text about the developments in the case. I don't know if they ever would have done that without pressure, but it's something.

The primary objective of journalism is supposed to be telling the truth. It is a DECISION on the part of USA Today to know that new details have emerged about this case and to refuse to update an old story that is still circulating and still shaming Jane Doe.

I'm not linking the piece because I'd like for as few people to read it as possible. I'm writing about it here because: - I want to be clear about what happened to anyone who saw that article and felt betrayed to see me associated with it. - These are bad decisions that deserve public shame.

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors. It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:

Nicole Bedera@nbedera.bsky.social · last wk.

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.

I'm the token expert voice saying that inconsistencies in victim's narratives are common in an otherwise brutally bad piece of journalism full of tropes about how not to report on sexual assault.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

The term “remigration” is associated with the extreme right and only came into widespread usage in 2023-4. Even Germany’s AfD avoided using the term in 2024 for fear of scaring away voters. Today the US government is celebrating the “victories” it’s racked up in the “ethnic cleansing” column.
