dumb jokes & occasional photos. no DMs please manifesto: I am a dumb jerk with bad taste. I will not change. I will not improve. That is a promise
The height of COVID was an incredibly stressful time with a lot of individual & ambient cultural trauma attached to it and, also, at the same time, many of the people who are most vocally Not Over It and never going to Get Over It were basically asked to care about other people & be bored for a bit
I hate even partly defending Feral Hogs Guy, esp. since I agree with Tim’s point here. One thing that seems obvs to me is, while his comment was extremely stupid, he also expressed it in a way that made it seem even stupider.
he never had a point. I get so mad about this but his point was never that there are packs of 30-50 feral hogs rampaging around America (they are) but that it was a sensible thing to shoot them all with an AR-15 while your kids play in the yard at the same time. that was the insane part.
This cruelty has no need but cruelty. Haiti remains deeply dangerous; a country in the throes of anarchy. Hundreds of thousands of people are SAFE. They are safe. They are safe here and the nation has decided to make them unsafe. We are embarking on a tragedy and we cannot look away. We cannot.
So many immigrants I've interviewed break down about this. "Monsanto Maler was one of several Haitian immigrants who traveled from Springfield for a check in...after an ankle monitor was attached to him, Maler was seen collapsing to the ground and crying." www.springfieldnewssun.com/local/hundre...
this isn't true. the first ever trans member of a US national team in any sport was a trans man. it didn't suit the transphobic media to let you know about it though.
If there are roughly equal numbers of trans men and women, how come there are virtually no known instances of trans men impacting high-level sports?
the last thing you see before getting sent to the shadow realm
if they're drinking nounwine it's fantasy. if they're snorting a verb it's sci fi
People: You can't just post one (ah, two) line from a song and expect everyone to know the song. Me: When the ground’s soft for diggin & the rain will bring all this gloom There’s nothin wrong with a lady drinkin alone in her room
People: You can't just post one line from a song and expect everyone to know the song. Me: Every man, every man for himself Every man, every man for himself All in favor say 'aye' Big Science, Hallelujah Big Science, yodellayheehoo Hey, Professor, could you turn out the lights? Let's roll the film
As I have said before (this from April 2020) the most important, timeless lesson of the French Revolution is that PEOPLE make history. It rarely turns out the way they expect, but their actions nonetheless matter.
ABE LINCOLN: get paper and pen and write this down MARY LINCOLN: ok ABE LINCOLN: Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent… okay read it back MARY LINCOLN: this down
First time I've seen this point raised. Graham Platner's volunteers revolted against him, his page on ActBlue was canned, the DSCC and the Maine Dems weren't going to spend on him or help him. Those things pushed him to drop out! The GOP has done none of the above, just a handful of them asking him.
"GOP may be stuck with Rep. Max Miller in Ohio" This piece is written as if the GOP were a passive bystander. But Republican leaders could have told Miller to get out. The could have said they wouldn't endorse him, or fund the race. Instead they enabled him to stay. www.axios.com/2026/08/09/o...
Mary Beard's book, The Invention of Jane Harrison, is another work about who gets remembered & why Funny, it would've been a long, long time before it occurred to me to think of it in connection w/ Center Stage, but for Justin's remark
- between our filmed story, the 1930s movies in production, & Stanley Kwan's movie (you see his crew) almost totally collapses. It's about Ruan but also about who gets remembered, why, & how. A masterpiece, & Maggie C is a genius.
Saw Stanley Kwan's CENTER STAGE again today. In my opinion the best biopic ever made, because it's the only one I know of that acknowledges the artifice. Clips from Ruan Lingyu's extant films, interviews with people who knew her, Maggie Cheung discusses playing the role.. by the end the line -
Another photo from the Faroe Islands, taken in Jun 2019. We spent a week there, and mostly the weather was like this - and apparently often is - rainy and foggy. Still pretty cool scenery :) #FaroeIslands
One of the craziest lakes I've ever seen - perched above a huge cliff. Definitely plays with the eyes. And extremely nerve-racking perching on the edge of the cliff to photograph it too! Faroe Islands, June 2019 #FaroeIslands #Geology
I don't know how easy it is to keep AI models that can write zero days contained, but I expect it's a lot *easier* if everyone involved isn't a part of a California New Religious Movement who considers "the AI escapes" to be advertisement for their company and their NRM simultaneously
everyone dunking on how easy it is to keep AIs contained this week has been fined 1 watching of Ex Machina
Today is Duodi the 22nd of Thermidor in the year 234. Thermidor is the month of heat. Today we celebrate capers. #JacobinDay See today's page
A Senate candidate talking about the Powell memo???? Pinch me, am I dreaming????
James Talarico: 50 years ago, a corporate lawyer named Lewis Powell circulated a memo around DC — a blueprint for how corporations could amass political power, reverse the gains of the Great Society and the New Deal, and rig the system for themselves. And it worked.
Over the course of 108 days, the below anhinga was raised from a nestling to its release...a first for Fort Lauderdale's South Florida Wildlife Center. The video shows its journey at the center and the great care the bird got from the center's staff. Safe travels, Mr. Anhinga! via SFWC insta 🪶
I am at Waffle House at 11pm and three teenagers in the next booth are discussing the Pope. GIRL1: So the pope— GIRL2: Which pope? GIRL1: Pope Leo. DUDE: What about Francis? GIRL1: He died. DUDE: THE POPE DIED?!? GIRL1: Like last year! We have an American Pope! DUDE: They can DO that?!
The Iran fiasco is the closest to comeuppance he's seen in a while and it's still unsatisfying because there are no real consequences for him personally! We should organize our country in a way that giant assholes aren't able to constantly wreck shit for everyone else and then shrug and walk away
This last sentence here is the entirety of my politics now
