Perfectly possible to think that the accusations of anti-semitism in the Labour party a few years ago were most amplified by hypocrites (guilty of a lot of anti-semitism themselves) *AND* that there was clearly a lot of anti-Jewish stuff among many on the left.
Just had a Google Scholar ping that something of mine has been cited and they have managed to attach a quote to me that I never wrote and have cited a chapter in my book as a internet source. I know different disciplines have different citation standards, but that's pretty poor...
Back to the history mines, I tell my wife. Just rearranging all my stuff in chronological order, I cheerily tell the cleaner. Pumping it all into the server now, I salute my head of department.
I know we attribute a lot of wrong to social media but I’m pretty sure there was once a time when someone apologising was grounds to sheathe your weapons, not stick the boot in.
Apologies: I’m not online much, I haven't paid any attention to Rod Liddle for a long time, I didn't really know his extremes. I do now: I wouldn’t have posted if I'd known. I’ve seen death of difficult people up close (and its impact on others): that’s the only reason it was on my mind as an issue.
We need to get back to old school wrestling, when Italian guys would pretend to be Indigenous, that’s what’s missing today.
Maybe businesses need to start actually paying to train their own workers rather than decrying the fucking fact that students don't know exactly how to do the job you're hiring them for.
President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v
New note to self: when writing feedback to non-Brits, do not use football pundit cliches to give guidance. e.g. "... for me, Clive"; "your Foucaults, your Bourdieus"; "hit that too well if anything"; etc.
My one spicy Odyssey take is that, like all of Nolan's films, it is *profoundly* middlebrow. So those of us who know a fair bit about the source material are annoyed by these very glib moments, but much of the audience isn't even going to spot them or will know just enough to pick up the theme.
this isnt a comment on the work as a whole but if i had written the line "our age of bronze is collapsing" and it was viewed by millions of people id probably seek death

The real reason child vaccination rates are falling
As child immunisation rates fall across the UK, one clinic in west Yorkshire is taking aggressive steps to boost immunisations

Always heartening when installing Zotero on a new machine that I get a message telling me "THIS WORK HAS BEEN RETRACTED" on the Wakefield Lancet paper.
There are people who will say we are being mean when Putin and Musk and Trump die. They will be wrong, too. They care more about civility in green rooms and class solidarity than the harms caused by individuals
He existed to disgust people. And a lot of people are mocking him now he's gone. It's the most touching tribute we can give him. Exactly what he would have wanted - or at the very least the most bountiful harvest following the most intense sowing of all time.
Yes, his family, like his daughter whose mother he assaulted when she was 20 weeks pregnant with her.
I am saddened by the tone of commentary in this place about my former BBC colleague. The level of vitriol seems more suited to the other place. I worked with Rod at the Today programme. He took no prisoners, but he was witty and personally capable of genuine warmth. My sympathy to his family.
I’m very much on the “don’t speak ill of the dead” side of civility but that doesn’t mean distorting what someone did with their life, particularly if they used their position to hurt others. Liddle was not a brilliant provocateur. He used misinformation to whip up hate against bedbound people.
OK, a lot of you need to just block rather than interacting beyond 2 (two) posts with the willfully thick. Let's not reward this sort of engagement here.
A word of warning to journal editors that I've had a couple of peer review requests go to my spam folder now. Can't be helping, given how difficult it is to get reviewers at the moment.
there are plenty of questions we might ask about the diagnostic parameters of ADHD, and the changing interpretation of them, and of the thresholds for medicating children, and the way withdrawal of other services pushes people into labels, but this question is both damaging and stupid
I don't think people are ready for this kind of joke yet.
Every post which begins "it's not about left vs right" goes on to say something which is easily categorisable as either left or right. "It's not about left vs right, it's rich vs poor" Mmm, yes, what could be more neutral than the concept of class war.
if I ever taught film criticism lesson one would be “you being smarter than the movie is not interesting to anyone”
Mad that Infantino probably had another 8-12 years of guaranteed VIP life, private jets and proximity-to-power from a role that asked nothing from him save the occasional, ‘let’s have 73 team World Cups/It’s handball if it touches your nose’ pronouncements. And he’s lost it all on this. <beams>
Old man opinion: players do not "make their debut" in friendlies.
“That was too sketchy a plan even for FIFA” is not a sentence I thought could be formed.
FIFA and Gianni Infantino have performed a U-turn on his plot to sell a stake in its commercial and event operations after widespread condemnation of the plans. Details: nyti.ms/4g2dPex
Vaccination is collective action: Vaccination helps others by hindering disease-spread But there is an incentive free-ride: if enough others vaccinate, you don't need to pay those costs In a new paper, we provide new evidence with data from 6+ mil covid-vaccinations: osf.io/preprints/ps... 🧵1/7
Just remembered that Bill Oddie was in Married With Children when the Bundys took a trip to Merrie Olde England.
