Worth reading Kaigan Carrie's piece in today's Times on the growing care needs of older prisoners. She's right: prisons were never designed to be care homes. It's unfair on prison staff and older prisoners alike to expect complex care needs to be met behind bars. We need meaningful prison reform now

Graphic with a green background and large white text reading: "Prisons are not care homes." An illustration shows an older prisoner sitting behind bars, hunched over and holding a walking stick, highlighting the challenges of ageing in prison. The Scottish Greens logo appears in the bottom left corner.

I was so anxious about my book getting its first review, so I'm massively chuffed that this review is so positive, but also that the reviewer understood exactly what I was trying to do. Might have a little cry to celebrate. Also, enter the Working Classicists' giveaway and I'll sign a copy for you!

We’ve got a copy of Alexandra Sills’ incredible new book ‘Gladiators in the Greek World' to give away - it’s signed and everything! Our review: www.workingclassicists.com/zine/book-re... T&Cs: UK only, ends 3rd Aug, RT this post and follow us and her (@belovedofoizys.bsky.social) to enter.

Cover of Gladiators in the Greek World featuring a relief of two pairs of gladiators fighting.

of the dodgy odyssey takes, 'odysseus is meant to be a stoic badass unaffected by war' probably winds me up the most. in the text the king of the phaeacians correctly guesses odysseus is a veteran of the trojan war because he keeps bursting into tears whenever anyone mentions it

Haven't seen the film yet; Nolan's Odyssey is probably full of historical inconsistencies - so is Homer's. And anyone who has waded through accepted translations into Victorian notions of bardic language, all 'forsooths' & 'methinkses,' should hit pause on instinctive hostility to this adaptation.

Can we just be cheerful that a massive box office smash hit is an explicit retelling of something we’re all apparently trying to promote the relevancy of? And the fact it’s not just a blokey rightwing bloke fest. It’s reflective and intimate at times, some incredible performances.
