In theory, I should be chomping at the bit to rent a bike and tool around Amsterdam, but instead I am very, very daunted. The cyclists here are fierce. They merge in and out of car roads fearlessly. Riding in L.A. has not taught me the confidence to ride in Amsterdam.

Tales From A Marriage, Part 389: My Husband Doesn’t Know Me Near Rembrandt House, we found a Dutch bistro with outdoor tables under huge umbrellas.very handy, given that a thunderstorm was rolling in. I saw herring on the menu & that was that. But my geek was surprised. 1/

A dish of cured herring, with arugula, chopped red onion and pickles. A wavy paper French flag on a toothpick is stuck on top one of the fillets. The fish is a grayish with pink sections, and may not look appetizing to some. They would be wrong, it was so delicious.

The SCREEN Act is not just another age-verification bill — it goes much further than anything passed at the state-level or in other countries. 1. The bill doesn't just target porn sites. It goes after *any* site that allows material "harmful" to minors. You'd have to scan your face to use Google.

Instead of dessert tonight, I am contemplating a taste test of dark chocolate bars with hazelnuts. The Ritter Sport is my fave, the other 2 I’ve never seen before now.

After a red-eye where I couldn’t sleep, nearly 2 hours going through customs and a half-hour looking for our luggage - my geek & I managed to get to central Amsterdam in time for Pride celebrations. Worth it.

Venice isn't letting this go. At tonight's meeting, the NC just passed this motion 15-1. I would definitely agree with their interpretation that this event did not qualify for a Coastal Commission exemption because there was no free component as promised. Agenda: www.venicenc.org/assets/docum...

Motion 79-26-VNC Many issues regarding the Venice Beach FIFA Fan Zone event were brought to the LUPC’s attention, including: the displacement of the artist vendors (signs with city seal but no permit # were posted); lack of prior City Department of Recreation & Parks approval of the event and related liability issues; the area labeled for free admission and screen viewing was fenced off and inaccessible; the blacked-out 8-foot fence around the event area; sheer noise levels from the estimated 3,000-5,000 attendees, with music from the rave heard for miles; responsibility for grass killed throughout event area; exorbitant cost of water and beer inside the event area; false advertising for the wellness event (which was advertised as free); blocking of street parking on surrounding streets during setup; dangerous conditions on the bike path, which included pedestrians, e-bikes and encroachment of sandbags/fencing; estimated poor negotiation of fee splits by the City; and Coastal Act Section 30610(i) “Guidelines for the Exclusion of Temporary Events from Coastal Commission Permit Requirements – Adopted 5/12/92” that seem too permissive (a temporary event may receive an exclusion from having a coastal permit only if it does not meet all three of these criteria: is held between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, occupies all or a portion of a sandy beach area, and involves a charge for general public admission or seating where no fee is currently charged for use of the same area). Therefore, the Venice Neighborhood Council (VNC) requests that 1) in the future, any permits for large events at the Venice Beach Boardwalk, such as for this multi-day FIFA Fan Zone event, be presented to the VNC for review and community input prior to City approval, both to inform the community of the event and to obtain community input, and 2) the City/CD-11 investigate the issues raised herein regarding the Venice Beach FIFA Fan Zone event, determine whether the permit conditions and require…

You may recall the case where Lynne Freeman sued Tracy Wolff for writing a YA set in Alaska where the male lead was hot and broody, just like in Freeman's book. This litigation went on for three years before a judge finally read both books and said there was zero infringement.
