So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?

Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

How anyone at the HWA let that pro-AI essay be published is beyond me. It's not just the stance or the tired argument about "gatekeeping" so much as the fact that it reads like the worst kind of angry Facebook post your parents ever embarrassed you with. The editor should be ashamed they let ... 1/?

AI users are a broken link on a chain that stretches all the way back to this kid and their impulse to create (and likely even before that). Creativity is a flame that has burned for over 700 generations and anyone who uses AI is helping to extinguish it.

15,000 years ago, in one of the the earliest settled communities in the world, a child collected fine clay from the slow-moving river by her home. She then committed an act familiar to all inveterate play-doh enthusiasts; rolling and and pinching the squishy clay into tiny round balls.

I’m not sure whether this is just a psychological difference or AI bros fundamentally don’t understand the nature of an artistic experience, but: I don’t want a personalised film/book/podcast. I want to see/read/hear the same one as everyone else, so I can read reviews or discuss it with my friends

Don't let the Ai discourse discourage you aspiring writers out there. Art is valued by its rarity, and the rarest thing in the world is the talent of a single individual. What can be mass produced for cheap has little value. You are an original. A one of a kind. A bespoke wonder. Never forget that.

it is very noticeable that historical movies are often far more willing to put female characters in costumes that have dynamic color, shape, etc. men are more likely to be costumed only in styles that look appealing to the insecure masculinism of the call of duty playerbase
