It's that time of year again - the EarthScope ISCE+ course in InSAR processing and analysis is underway! Here (on his short course debut) is Francisco Delgado leading us through a first modeling exercise using InSAR displacements over Okmok Volcano!

⚒️ 🧪 A M6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan today. Large quakes in Japan are common and often pass without much notice, but this one is serious - instead of occurring offshore in the subduction zone, it is a shallow, strike-slip event near Kumamoto. Damage and deaths have already been reported.

as a retired industrial scientist, it’s important to note industry has a time window that is short and won’t fund stuff unless they think it could pay off within five years. just because it’s interesting doesn’t get funded.

For Venezuela right now: yes, 100%. And for California (and I know Lucy knows this), the lesson is to design FOR recovery. All the new housing, renewable energy, etc. that we can't wait to build ... it WILL go through major earthquakes, so let's design it to recover function quickly. We know how.

The coming months could compound the problems in Venezuela. Disasters damage what is already weak. Recovery needs an influx of money and people to get the economic system functioning again.

⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.

Not plotted here but the epicenter is located near the western limit of InSAR fringe, indicating rupture was predominantly towards the east, including Caracas. So rupture directivity, which is like a seismic Doppler effect, likely contributed to stronger ground-shaking effects and damage.

It's taken me a while, but here is my first interferogram of the Venezuela earthquakes from Sentinel-1. It's an ascending track to the west of the epicenter, and the pattern of displacements is consistent with slip on a fault that runs close to and parallel to the coast.

This is the whole thing. Basic, wonky, weird, non-applied, whatever you want to call it, science is usually the eventual foundation of everything you know as "technology" or "medicine". It's not even a case of "if they succeed" - the investment is in the voluminous incremental advancements

"Right now, in some underfunded lab, a scientist is chasing a question that sounds pointless.... No one can say if they will succeed. But a century of experience says that funding people to do this work is a good bet. If we stop making that bet, we will pay for it in cures no one will know to miss."
