It absolutely can be! We took the first step by passing a pilot to look at new methods of pedestrianization and at pedestrianizing more often. But when the pilot ends we'll need a new resolution making open parkways a reality. That will require a huge amount of public support and engagement!

Yesterday, after explaining how he rations his pancreas medication due to cost, my 80 y.o. dad proudly showed me the hi-vis vest he has for neighborhood patrol, and I became acutely aware of the rage I hold for all the actions/inaction that have led us here. This morning, federal agents staged at the Powderhorn Park Recreation Center lot and began to throw chemical irritants at observers. They also kidnapped an observer. Our parks are meant for our children, youth, and neighbors. They should never be militarized zones meant to separate families. 1/

Legal observers at the Whipple Federal Building witnessed ICE agents swapping out license plates in the ICE staging location. Masked agents who already routinely refuse to identify themselves are now swapping license plates at whim to kidnap our neighbors and tear apart families.

Celeste Robinson, Minneapolis Ward 2 council office, urging "serious public health conversation" about the racially disparate impacts, getting beyond "air quality" as an abstraction. This is about life expectancy, brain development, heart attacks, strokes, that "parts per million" doesn't capture.

Update from superintendent: "MPRB will fully adhere to and follow Mayor Frey’s Executive Order 2025-02 dealing with Immigration and Customer Enforcement (ICE) presence in our city and prohibit any MPRB parking lot from being used to stage civil immigration enforcement operations."

We are monitoring the situation in St. Paul and working to understand what unfolded. We received no heads up from federal authorities on this operation. While we are always willing to work together on public safety, that is clearly not what this chaotic situation was about.
