This is the core of American rot, in my opinion. Nobody wants to do the hard work of confronting power, so we reach for magic bullets. Then, predictably, entrenched power uses those tools to further entrench themselves.

Instead of taking on the power of policing directly we keep reaching for clever workarounds that are then used by the police to concentrate more power.

The technological solution to racist policing being abused by the police until it becomes publicly untenable is a particular type of dark irony.

A note: People may think the inconsistency and incoherence of MAGA means it can't be totalitarian, but that's actually another common feature of totalitarian societies. If the ideology was coherent and predictable, you could reliably parrot it, meaning you could be safe. They don't want that.

This is an obvious marker for totalitarianism. In totalitarian societies, anyone can be arrested at any time for reasons they don't understand and can't predict, and the resulting terror is very much an intended consequence.

Trump is now demanding political show trials not only against opponents, but against random people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
