People aren’t faking their disabilities, they’re faking being well. We know society hates us. We know we will be judged for using assistive devices. Many of us take years to get the courage to lean in to accommodations. Stop judging. Help us build a more inclusive world.

This is a revelation to me. Are most history depts not already "service depts"? I assumed they were. In any given year I might teach 500 students, most of them in the intro surveys, and maybe 25 of those 500 are history majors. But it's important to note how admins set these classes up to fail.

We know that the best way to draw someone into a history major is in a class of 12. That's why you don't get classes of 12 as a service dept. You get 180 students, in two-hour chunks, with no breakout sessions or teaching assistants. You are set up to fail, at least in terms of attracting majors

We are all teachers of reading. Even in high school. We cannot stop teaching HOW to read in elementary school. It is a life-long process and needs to occur in all classes.

I’m intentionally teaching my students how to speak and listen to each other using visual awareness cues. So far, it’s going well! Students love their speaking awareness sticks and the Talking Moves sentence stems help my students have better academic discussions. #TeacherSky

Deaf/signing friends.. my school has us do an “enrichment”.. 9 weeks, every other day, 75 minutes each time, 5th grade. I plan to do an intro to ASL..give students a little ASL/Deaf culture spark but I’m not sure how to structure it. Anyone done anything similar or have suggestions for a structure?

Me in action looked over by #Shakespeare — with @runwithskizzers.bsky.social’s “Payal Mehta’s Romance Revenge Plot” on display on the top shelf! I was sharing a history of Western theatre lecture with my Introduction to Drama students, who can already run warm-ups on their own in week 2!

For the 73rd but likely not the last time, I am not afraid of AI. Students must do authentic work in the English classroom; AI short-circuits that in fundamental ways; thus its use is banned. Having students use their brains is the best preparation for an unknown future. Why does this need saying.
