I am in this weird space. 1 week until I return to work to set up my classroom. 2 weeks until students arrive. I want to slow down my final summer days, and quickly finish my summer reads. Once school starts, my day-long reading routine disappears, replaced by stolen minutes early in the morning.

Mychal sits & shares that Ms. Rachel posted, “Black boys deserve to grow up.” This is not controversial, it is hope. Black library kids deserve to grow up to become Black library grown-ups. Black boys deserve to live in a world where that has not always felt true. Black boys deserve joy ✨

"opening the lines of communication with the teachers in your building helps everyone" Evergreen advice here: a school building where teachers are authentically engaged with one another, around our work and beyond it, is a better school building—for teachers and also for students.

Safety and comfort are not the same thing. Feeling uncomfortable or unsettled is not the same as being unsafe (although it can feel the same). Self-awareness must include reflection on the difference.

I’m already exhausted by the respectability politics of this back to school season, specifically as it relates to dress code. Bonnets don’t stop kids from learning, and Black girls don’t need more policing in schools. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
