This is a horrible, tragic loss in the heart of one of our city’s historic cultural districts. Reports that MFD was unable to access water from fire hydrants in the area are disturbing, as is the initial rush to assign blame to unhoused people. Our relatives will need support. Please be ready.
BREAKING: Two buildings are on fire in Minneapolis. Extreme heat and collapsing roofs prompted firefighters to evacuate, and two firefighters have been injured. Details: https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-news/roofs-collapse-as-large-fire-roars-in-minneapolis-2-firefighters-injured
I cannot begin to explain the state violence that unhoused people in Minneapolis experience in just one post. And a great many people want to inflict *more* violence on our unhoused neighbors.
Also: the cruelty inflicted on the unhoused is a barometer of the state violence we're willing to tolerate.

It's actually not complicated. You end homelessness with safe, dignified housing people can afford.
It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.
Zohran Mamdani is pretty great as mayors go. But he doesn’t have even a fraction of the integrity that my city councilmember Jason Chavez does. And I think it’s reasonable to have high standards for elected officials.
Today I was loading my groceries into the trunk in the parking lot when I noticed an older couple in their car just staring at me. I tried to hurry up in case they wanted my spot but there were lots of open spots. 3 min later, I realized they were staring at my ass. Eventually they drove away
My client and I to MPR about this phenomenon. Two other attorneys are quoted talking about their client as well. We're not going to let ICE get away with making a mockery of court orders like this. www.mprnews.org/story/2026/1...
Catch, release, catch: Inside ICE's new 'farce' tactic
Multiple immigration detainees in Minnesota have been ordered released by federal judges only for them to be immediately re-detained by immigration officers at the doors of the Whipple Federal buildin...

Will is 100% right. Has happened to multiple clients of mine. One judge (not my case) has said that this isn't really release and ordered the person *actually* released. But it's forcing us habeas attorneys to win our cases twice (or more)
Technically I am a dog person but my neighbor’s outdoor cat keeps trying to move into my house

One of my favorite things about kids is how they love to make adults laugh. If something gets a laugh once, they will say it or do it again and again and again to try to get another laugh. It works every time on me.
Drop in traffic at @supplydepotmpls.bsky.social has tripled over the last few months, as needs have increased due to city actions in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul. We need to boost fundraising so we can increase capacity - please help if you can! SupplyDepotMpls.com for all the links

One thing that’s interesting about Behavioral Crisis Response in Minneapolis, as it’s currently run, is that one of the external seeds that led to it was during the 2018 budget season (so this time of year, deciding on the city budget for 2019). That year Frey wanted to hire some new cops
what the hell are “livability calls” and why do we need to create an additional category for these if they aren’t committing a crime and aren’t going through a crisis that would require BCR response? feels like a new and codified way to harass people existing in public and we know it will be
if the BCR program was created in 2021 to move away from police responding to non emergency mental health crises, why would we select community bridges whose board has 4 cops, heaviest profession represented? 3 firefighters. 2 city staff / electeds 1 addiction specialist. 1 psychotherapist 4 COPS
on the agenda today: authorizing a contract with community bridges to provide services for mobile crisis response these services are currently provided by canopy roots public works director enrique velasquez is here and multiple workers in BCR shirts
Bike theft is not just a Minneapolis problem. Every city I’ve lived in with 100,000+ people, every apartment or house with a locked garage, has got broken into by bike thieves.
This is a nice sentiment, but I need bike people to understand how pervasive bike theft is in any city of 100,000+ people. I would have to store an e-bike (or really any bike) inside of my tiny house. Garages in my neighborhood get broken into all the time.
Cities should be paying people to bike. Cities should be buying people e-bikes. Cities should be rewarding people for convincing neighbors to ride bikes. Every trip by bike is a net financial gain socially. And it compounds, the more people who do it.
To all the “good liberal white” Ed Reformers “speaking up for Black families” in response to the Transformation Plan…Please stop. 😐 It’s not a good look. Black people invented resistance to institutional oppression in this country. We don’t need you speaking on what you think you know.
My hot take is that white people should not be making a movie about the very real terror and trauma that Black and Brown people experienced PERIOD, but they should especially not release it LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER IT HAPPENED. My god.
Our flight tracking work is included in "They're Here," a short horror documentary about Metro Surge. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and makes its Minnesota debut on Wed, Oct 7. Made by an Oscar-winning filmmaker, I'm confident it's well-done and will be really difficult to watch.
My six-year-old is insisting we do a family Halloween costume this year. He has chosen the life cycle of a butterfly. So if you see me out trick-or-treating with my kids dressed as caterpillar eggs, now you know why
“solutions like closing schools are not really meaningful solutions,” says christin crabtree, running for minneapolis school board. “what that does is it shrinks the number of kids, it shrinks the level of stability in our district, and we end up responding to disinvestment with disinvestment.”
To all of the people saying “How does it make sense for MPS to spend $100 million on a new building for Anishinaabe Academy?” I hope you realize how you sound.
I just got done speaking to 500 minneapolis families from across the city on why I support delaying the MPS closure plan. After COVID, the CDD, and Operation Metro Surge our students need stability. This plan is rushed & still leaves many questions about the district’s financial future unanswered.
This morning, myself, BET President Brandt, MPRB President Olsen sent a letter to Mayor Frey, Council President Payne, and CM Chughtai outlining our concerns about unaccountable spending by MPD, and its impact on our city's long-term fiscal outlook. 1/
