This is a big problem. If the last information people receive is always “numbers went up” because “numbers went down” is never reported we shouldn’t be surprised that perceptions about immigration end up so skewed. Media should take some responsibility here - this is a salient and polarising issue.

I think that the worst thing about the "refugee tax" is that the high accommodation costs are caused by the Home Office, and in particular their inability to make fast AND accurate decisions, leaving people rotting in those grim places. Refugees are effectively being fined for HO incompetence.

Pretty certain any asylum seeker holed up in a hotel being targeted by violent racists would not say they’ve truly felt the ‘generosity of the British people’

Or alternatively, Nigel Farage has declared £2 million in outside income and gifts since being elected to parliament 2 years ago. £5 million is 150% more than that. Yep. Farage got given 5 years pay as a one off, no strings gift for nothing in return.

Exactly this. Mahmood’s policies are horrible enough that Guardian readers dislike them without understanding them. And not ‘headline front page’ horrible enough for Mail voters. They also won’t reduce boat crossings in meaningful numbers, which is how people now seem to judge all migration.
