Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. Researcher in gravitational wave science. Spokesperson for the LISA Consortium. This is my personal feed so posts are a combination about gravitational waves and cycling infrastructure in Dublin.

Another train travel thread. This time from Brussels to Lausanne. Track damage in the Netherlands was leading to delays so I got an earlier train than planned from Brussels in order to not miss my connection. The Eurostar app made rebooking extremely easy.

🎉 Today marks 10 years since the publication of the very first paper from LISA Pathfinder mission: "Sub-Femto-g Free Fall for Space-Based Gravitational Wave Observatories: LISA Pathfinder Results". A milestone that launched a decade of discovery and exploration beyond Earth.

We literally just posted about yesterday's solar records before seeing another has already been broken, with output reaching 1263MW (~25% of electricity demand at the time) just before noon. We'll have more on this but just a little reminder that you can follow these in real-time on our website.

A chart showing a historical solar records on the island of Ireland. Output is in orange and output to demand ratio in blue. Records are indicated with a large circle and the time between with dashed lines.

Footnote reads: All-island figures. Excludes rooftop solar.

My paper computing gravitational wave energy fluxes for scattered orbits within the self-force approach has been published in Physical Review D: doi.org/10.1103/v6rz.... In the paper I make comparisons with the latest post-Minkowskian results, as well as post-Newtonian and numerical relativity.

After such an epic moonset, I was delighted to go home with just that but this day last year had another trick up its sleeve in the opposite direction. The horizon was all hazy, perfect to align the sunrise with North Bull Lighthouse.
