So, I can't eat any fresh greens when I come to America next week? This is the type of advice I used to get when traveling to places like India or Indonesia...

Apparently 2/3 of Americans don’t know who Mao was. 7/10 for Deng. Shocking but not surprising lack of popular knowledge about Chinese politics. It’s a huge issue. (before you snark with ‘oh Americans are so uniquely stupid’ are you confident similar results wouldn’t obtain in many other places?)

In @lawfaremedia.org, I argue Chinese AI companies do not operate as independent actors in the way their American counterparts do, and the absence of visible anti-AI resistance among the Chinese public hardly reflects genuine public consensus. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-...

The Missing Resistance in China’s AI Debate

As Washington negotiates AI guardrails with Beijing, it must understand why the AI debate in China is so quiet: control, not consent.

Does clearing forests in places like #Papua #Indonesia, or clearing grasslands in #Cerrado #Brazil actually help create “sustainable” transport fuel? The ecological consequences often outweigh emission savings For @semafor.com, I explore the risks and hidden costs of #BigOil’s pivot to #Biofuels

Why biofuels are back

The energy crisis sparked by the Iran war has spurred renewed interest in the fuels, but some experts are skeptical of their scalability and environmental benefits.

Ever wonder why wearing masks is so common in #Japan every spring? A post-WWII reforestation policy to plant just two types of fast-growing trees has triggered a mass-allergy crisis. My latest for @bbc looks at the roots of this 70-year-old blunder and the massive challenge of fixing it.

Japan is gripped by mass allergies. A 1950s project is to blame

A decision made 70 years ago to reforest vast swathes of Japan with just two kinds of tree has come back to haunt the country.

During an interview, a #Japanese expert noted that it was a major shock to the economy when #Sharp was acquired by a #Chinese company. Except, it wasn't Chinese. It was Taiwanese. From their perspective, it didn't matter - but from my perspective, it's dramatically different.
