Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

Please help me get the word out to people who might be interested in reading Democracy Americana in German. I hope I can build a readership large enough to carry this experiment of offering my work in two languages (it’s a struggle!). If you want to read the essay in English, you find it here:

Germany is facing the prospect of rightwing extremism in power. Time to push back hard against the narratives that have undermined the democratic response in the U.S.

My wife, a prodigious sleep-talker, failed to disclose her affliction when we started dating, which led to the fright of my life the night she sat bolt upright in bed and in a low flat monotone loudly declared that “THIRTEEN BABIES REMAIN UNFATHERED.”

With Brady in the discourse again, I was just thinking about how many hockey fans (and Sens fans) still want a guy on the team who is good at fighting. Seeing lotsa posts from fans worrying about who’s gonna be chucking knuckles, and it’s like… no one? It’s 2026? We don’t need that guy.

After reading this @graemenichols.bsky.social piece about the slogan, I’m left feeling like they settled on the French copy first? The concept of “choosing a battle/choosing Ottawa” is interesting but the French version is about 1000 times better than the English thehockeynews.com/nhl/ottawa-s...

Speed cameras are good, actually. Just like bike lanes, wider side walks, and traffic calming are all good things. So many car-related deaths are totally preventable, and I find it depressing how so many people, regardless of their political affiliation, can’t see the size of the problem.

So on the one hand the Jays are 59-64 and absolutely cannot hit to save their lives, but on the other hand, three wildcard spots 👀👀👀👀

Real France fans recognize this kinda self-sabotaging performance and are comforted by it in an almost nostalgic way. It had been so long since we saw them throw a fit like this.
