Chaotic good w/ redneck roots. Medievalist/teacher/PhD candidate/worker/overexplainer/aspiring pícara. Personal account; loud opinions (which is all of them) my own. she/her 📍 North Carolina (in the woods somewhere instead of doing my work)
aw man this popped up randomly in my notifications and based on the rambling I was doing literally yesterday it is apparently (unfortunately) an evergreen post
why is it a me problem that a bunch of academics have the preferred form of single focus neurodivergence and don’t also want to be geologists. that’s THEIR deficiency
I don’t have favorite students of course but if I were to have them there would possibly be a noticeable trend over the years where when they leave my office I tend hear them saying things like “wait, where are my keys” and “where am I” and “oh no where is my backpack”
Apparently a county in Virginia voted down a proposed hobbit-style housing project, and the local newspaper has an epic editorial in response www.sovanow.com/articles/dow...

My colleague brought in Rainier this morning to the library. He's a very Good Boy. He went to investigate the breakfast sandwich situation of a nearby student right after this.
I still can’t figure out if this is just ADHD adulthood or if the rest of them are doing it too but have too much pride to discuss it as openly.
Productivity as an adult is just an endless process of applying new psychological tricks and operant conditioning to yourself until an acceptable number of tasks are completed.
When you start carving a headstone but have a serious attack of the curlicues.. Todays theme for #31DaysofGraves is Lettering and I'm sure there's a letter in there somewhere.
seriously tho what’s a girl gotta do to be allowed to shout research ideas at people who study her conditions. do not make me get another phd after this. it’s actually p messed up that there is no form of patient feedback or focus grouping involved in research direction for most conditions
Once again I should be the person who says what ADHD research should be focusing on. Or like you can have a council of us open to any ADHDers with academic training. Too few of us are in the labs studying us bc we’re bad at memorization & thus often STEM and they are not studying the right things 😐
Honestly would love to see that language start being used when talking about abolishing ICE and defending the police.
The Swords to Plowshares Act, the final undoing of Christian white nationalist theocracy. (Maybe we don’t call it that actually but come on)
I am irked that apparently it’s widely known that ADHD has an increased prevalence of vertical heterophoria yet apparently no studies of the prevalence of 4th nerve palsy—common congenital cause of vertical heterophoria—in ADHD.
I tried to think of worse restaurant names, and then I immediately decided not to skeet them, because the "food+atrocity location" model turned up some real zingers almost immediately.
Souplantation will return to Orange County in 2027. 'There is a god'
It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
If this had “We Can’t Shut Up About Chaucer” it would be complete
Punching my ticket to Kalamazoo
this is incomprehensible to me. i have been looking at it for so long. i thought criterion must be the name of that car and oat milk the name of that dog, in the pattern of nalgene being the name of that bottle, for a WHILE. why does aristocracy get a truck *and* a tote bag. tag urself
one of the only things that has made me feel slightly better about the existence of menstruation in like 20 years or so is I just now found out both of these little creatures are also subject to it
it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"
Harvard just dropped a study AI productivity in software engineering and it found the average increase in productivity from using Claude code is.....zero and for exactly the reasons you'd think fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf
The terminology of "low quality" men/women is incredibly Trumpian and that language's popularity in certain parts of our culture signals comfort with fascist interpretative frameworks
ok one note for the discourse and it is that you should take note when quoted experts are emeriti! sometimes it’s bc they’re the esteemed experts in their fields. but sometimes they will use outdated frameworks. sometimes the writer cherry-picked a perspective they could only find in retirees

If you're willing to sell out trans kids for theoretical votes I have to assume you'd sell out anyone for theoretical votes, so, yes, I do think supporting sports bans means you get not a fucking thing from me.
"Being glutened" is a good turn of phrase which could easily be applied to things like "shellfished", however adaptation may be needed for dairy and peanuts as I do not believe being "lactated" and "peanutted" are suitable for restaurant use
All the more depressing when you remember the largest bar on this graph is only one tenth of campus sexual assault (90% of campus sexual assault goes unreported altogether)
Of more than 1,200 reports of sexual misconduct from 2018 to 2024, seven people were expelled or dismissed from Cornell. Fourteen were suspended.
much like extremely grim (pseudo)leftist power struggles in queer spaces. I both think there probably is a rapidly-increasing visibility-driven pattern of cutting off family that could be iffy in the *minority* of cases, but also know that there is no way we are socially ready to discuss it

one of those historical fact-checking things that doesn’t really matter except it BOTHERS me as a medievalist: it seems more and more apparent that many people think plague was transmitted by rats *because the rats were biting people*
And for our very last paper of #MAMG26 (though do stick around for the closing remarks!) we have @robehoughton.bsky.social on "The Problem with Paladins" - what effect do these pseudo-crusaders have on our gaming? middleagesinmoderngames.net/mamg26/the-p... #Paladins #Crusade #Medieval #DnD
so most bad things ppl encounter are common. the worst thing that ever happens to u happens to 100s the same day. BUT I think I’ve produced a NEW unfortunate event by knocking a dried dyeball fungus off my desk as I dropped a sunstone, causing the gem to land on it & explode dye spores into my rug
