usually when i hear people say that the moon is a planet, i just have to shake my head. like, yes, if it’s a full moon? okay. you’ve got me there. a full moon is a circle and therefore a planet. outside of that, though, a planet either has to be a circle, like jupiter, or a dot, like stars

To the candidates who said they support bus lanes but not a bikeway on San Pablo, note that right side bus lanes w/o dedicated bike infrastructure are legally bikeable, so people WILL bike there if no other facility is provided. If we don't want bikes in our bus lanes we have to ALSO build bikeways.

On this day in 1972, America's second generation metro service @bart.gov began service with trains between MacArthur and Fremont Station. After 20 years of planning and 5 years of disruptive construction, thousands of Bay Area locals crowded BART stations with cameras to see these space-age trains.

it's two things, to me: 1) trans rights matter because trans people matter and deserve rights, not just because failing to stand for trans rights is a bellwether for inauthentic progressivism more broadly 2) if you can't be trusted on trans rights you can't be trusted on anything

I see a lot of people actively losing their minds about the AI stuff and I'm honestly starting to feel bad for them. But it's blinding them to the real problems. These things are not your girlfriend, but they're probably going to smash-and-grab passwords and attack bank or government data.

The observation that the most alarmist claims about A.I.’s impact seem to come from the individuals most connected to Rationalism should anger us. This exaggerated grimness makes it easy to overlook the more immediate harms created by these technologies, such as their potential use in cybersecurity attacks, excess resource consumption, impact on our cognitive fitness, role in undermining education and amplification of soul-deadening slop. This style of anxious talk also allows the A.I. companies to portray themselves as the reluctant “stewards” of an inevitable technology, which is a framing they can use to deflect blame for damage caused by their own products.

Smoke from the prescribed burn on Angel Island has driven down air quality in the East Bay. Did a short bike ride to the Albany Bulb. Decided to head home. The adverse health effects of even short-term exposure to PM10 & PM2.5 are real. Be careful out there. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
