not quite. you see, it is very simple. a video game can be any or just one of these things, and can be in any state on this chart at any time depending on the context or rearrangement of its elements (mode, ruleset, singleplayer vs multiplayer, etc.). elementary

video game is........................

a three-circle venn diagram. the circles are labeled "media art", "toy", and "game" ludological.

the central overlap area reads "the ocean of simulacra (here be monsters).

the overlap between media art and toy is a gradient range. towards toy, it is labeled "ritualized play". towards media art, it is labeled "virtualized installation art".

the same applies for the other two overlaps.

between toy and game (ludological), towards game is labeled "structured play", and towards game (luodological) is labeled "tactile-cognitive challenge".

between media art and game (ludological), towards media art is "ludonarrative media", and towards game (ludological) is "social sport".

a wikipedia citation at the bottom reads

for science, bc I got into a big argument with my friend group over this, if I were to say something like "video games are intrinsically a form of toy"...how would that make you feel?

I also strongly believe that innovation and expression are not synonyms and that the art world's prioritisation of innovation is capitalistic, and has a history in tandem with capitalism, and that its perfectly possible to express yourself in a form that hasn't moved for a thousand years

I dunno man, I think if I was going to imply that artists who I’ve decided aren’t expressing themselves sufficiently are responsible for the conditions leading to generative ai, and then go on to say that being new and different and wanting to express something that no one has ever thought before is kinda in my DNA, I’d have tried a bit harder to make some art that was either technically or thematically new or different or expressing something that no one has ever though before, first.

that the rationale for updating the references in YA novels is essentially the logic of "immersion" demonstrates further the concept's deleterious social and aesthetic effects as it leaches from the gaming sphere into the broader culture
