You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Except for religious studies, the graduates of these "loan ineligible" majors are disproportionately women. Fans of this policy have probably never considered that social worker, cosmetician, teachers aide, etc might be low-paying jobs *because* women do them. newrepublic.com/post/213446/...

A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

This is very real, and also why I keep an emergency pair of shoes in my office.

also weird but necessary sidebar to the uefa/fifa drama. in UK/International English, 'tabling' something means proposing it. so being 'on the table' means it is actively being considered. for some weird reason US English reverses the meaning. Uefa are talking in the UK, not US sense, here.

and that Nolan’s anti-war politics is in tension with the love affair with violence in the mise-en-scene! (IMO all anti-war films share this formal contradiction, but she’s not wrong.) Jeez, CTFD!

Good lord there are a lot of bad faith accounts of Emily Wilson’s argument buzzing around. She doesn’t care that the film isn’t literal enough! She cares that the writing is bad, that Odysseus is an uxorious sad sack, that the women are desexualized and given little to do or say/

Not wanting to wade too much into the discourse, but Wilson has been writing reviews of translations for decades, and has generally been incisive without pulling punches. This is ... normal.

Is this a good time to mention that in college my History of Translation lecturer (Michael Cronin) told us that one of the first vernacular translations of The Illiad was into Irish, and the translator had to give the main characters dogs because in Gaelic society a free man had a dog

Fund the Humanities just because. Fund the Humanities for more vicarious intellectual intercourse on Main. Whichever.

All this is to say: any translator's translation of a text, however formal, is itself a strong, long opinion. To imagine that a translator should have no opinions on the text & on the work of other translators and adaptors is pretty silly given the many year labors we all spend on our translations.

This is exactly correct -- because it's a wonderful translation, Wilson was very astute in the lead up and launch about building interest, and many of us have adopted it for our classes.

Listen, i work in historic preservation and conservation and this headline is misleadingly skipping the key point: this specifically and pointedly destroys the protections for Native American sacred sites. built heritage matters but not as much as the rights of indigenous folk.
