“Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the vice chair of the appropriations committee, wrote in a statement that “Breast cancer patients shouldn’t be denied hope of a new lifesaving treatment because Russ Vought thinks women’s health research is woke… I’m going to fight this corrupt heist every step of the way”

Honestly, it was scary to think about being named. As I sat with the opportunity more, I thought that there aren’t a ton of moments to act and set up a better future for science. We’ve all been through a lot. Even though I’m at a vulnerable stage of my career, I also have relative privilege…

Rosa Parks' refusal to stand up and give her seat up to a white passenger on the bus was not some random, one time act taken because she was tired. Her action was part of a preconceived NAACP Bus campaign for equality and Parks was a dedicated activist. "Small" actions matters.

Opening tomorrow, the Institute will serve as a policy-in-action hub dedicated to addressing the damage, protecting the nation’s science and technology ecosystem, strengthening research integrity, and ensuring democratic accountability for federal agencies. 3/7

The Institute will focus on strengthening oversight of federal policy actions targeting scientific organizations; and rebuilding federal science and technology capacity in the wake of the Trump administration’s destructive targeting of science, public health, and public safety institutions. 4/7

The Stand Up for Science Foundation (a nonpartisan 501c3) is launching a new Institute to craft and implement policy that will address the damage to federal agencies and institutions, recenter evidence-based decision making, and reestablish the United States as a global leader in science. 2/7

All of this is my way of saying: we need basic discovery science, and we need people who use those ideas to build practical tools. Having both is a great strength of our nation. I hope we can keep that strength, and keep it alive for future generations.
