What's frustrating about the response to the Cicero Institute is that prominent Housing First defenders are often uninterested in land use policy, so they can't explain the real reason why HF hasn't produced results at scale in California. Which leaves a vacuum for creeps like Lonsdale to fill.

Nithya Raman has been removed as chair of Los Angeles City Council's housing committee, to be replaced by a member who, in a pro-housing forum no less, thoughtlessly bragged about how she reduced the scale of an affordable housing project. Truly insane.

The Berkeley City Council will vote on whether to provide protected bike lanes on Hopkins Street. What's interesting is that they did already, back in 2022. When that vote happened (which was later derailed), my older daughter was not yet born. She will start TK the week after this vote.

Get ready to support a July 28 Council vote to make Hopkins smooth, safe, and accessible for all! Back in April, at safe streets advocates’ urging, City Council’s infrastructure-focused committee unanimously recommended that Council reject a proposal to repave Hopkins with only pedestrian improvements unless it is changed to include bike lanes and transit improvements. Since then, Councilmember Kesarwani (D1) has developed a new proposal that largely aligns with the committee’s recommendations and adopted City plans. You can read the new and improved proposal here starting on page 63. On July 28, Council will vote on it. The proposed design has 1-way protected bike lanes on each side of the street from The Alameda to Peralta (where they will connect to the Ohlone Greenway). It also proposes painted bike lanes and traffic calming from The Alameda to Sutter, traffic calming from Peralta to San Pablo, and pedestrian safety and transit improvements. So while there’s room for improvement, this is a huge step forward.

Albany’s bike/walk plan was approved by City Council last night w a vote of 4-1, & live public comments about 2-1 in support. The Solano Ave protected bikeway recommendation was retained! 🎉 🎉 🎉 Thank you to everyone who wrote in or made comments live, & to the councilmembers for their support!
