I knew he was never going to let this go. He will soon demand that somebody fabricate evidence and put someone in prison for an imaginary crime, all to soothe his narcissistic black hole of an ego, which insists that he always be right. He must be a persecuted victim and nothing is ever his fault.

Having trouble finding it but I think NPR interviewed a historian about the drop in diary entries around the 1918 flu pandemic. The memory holing is partially propaganda but also a collective trauma response.

Refrigerator trucks full of bodies. Mass graves. Family members dying alone in hospital corridors and unable to have proper funerals for fear of deceased spreading disease to funeral home workers. Our social media-induced attention spans are memory holing history at an increasingly alarming rate.

I will never forget waking up at 3am every morning as they turned the floodlights on outside to place more bodies into the mobile morgue outside my window. Everyone’s beloved dead, stacked nightly like so much excess, while the waking city was a claustrophobic nightmare. Never.

There's a famous story about Joe Stalin making a speech in 1937. When he was done, the audience began clapping wildly but then everyone was afraid to stop. They kept going for 11 minutes. Finally one guy had enough and stopped, and then everyone else could too. That guy was imprisoned for 10 years.
