It's funny how often school comes up and I go "You know, I *was* a little sod... but my god, how are you losing this battle with a 9 year old?" It's fascinating no-one tested my hearing. They'd all just decided I was "being difficult". (If not for grammar school I'd have arson on my record.)

Younger kids being forced to do 'popcorn reading' aloud in class managed to be punitive to the whole room--the reader is frequently humiliated by public stumbling, the listeners are dying of boredom and secondhand embarrassment.

I swear to God, part of the problem of literacy is that we make kids read SO MANY books like this. Of course they’re going to associate reading with misery! We put them in a Skinner box and shock them when they read, what did people THINK would happen?

Having ranted about school curriculum books, I’ve just seen my son’s summer reading list, and all I can say is “I was right”. A more depressing collection would be tricky to assemble. Are we actively trying to convey to kids the idea that reading is dismal and arduous?

I have tolerance for independent authors who don't know any better but the fact that Amazon's own imprints cannot be bothered optimizing pricing to end in .99 in non-US regions makes me absolutely insane.
